Fans have a lot to look forward to! In addition to all the new content released recently, several exciting projects are in development. One of the most talked-about is a full anime series based on “The Ninth Jedi,” which first appeared in the Star Wars: Visions collection. Lucasfilm has now officially confirmed they are fully supporting the spin-off.
The initial “The Ninth Jedi” short story followed Kara, the daughter of a famous lightsaber maker, as she got involved in a quest to rebuild the Jedi Order. Josh Rimes, a vice president at Lucasfilm, recently shared details about the upcoming limited series. He described Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, set to release in 2026, as the first fully animated Star Wars series created in the anime style. Rimes also confirmed that Lucasfilm has been heavily involved throughout the entire process, from the initial idea to the final production, and assured fans that the series is shaping up to be amazing.
Lucasfilm Studio Backs ‘Full On Anime Star Wars Series’
The initial success of “The Ninth Jedi” in Star Wars: Visions Season 1 sparked a continuation of its story. A follow-up episode, “The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope,” premiered in Season 3 this October, and directly leads into a new series. According to creator Rimes, after the Visions anthologies proved popular, the studio sought ways to build on the short-form storytelling. “The Ninth Jedi” stood out as a great example of how the creators could develop rich worlds and characters within the anthology format.
I was immediately drawn to the expansive world of The Ninth Jedi, and the first short’s ending hinted at a huge adventure ahead,” said Rimes. “That’s why my conversations with director Kenji Kamiyama and the team at Production I.G flowed so naturally. Production I.G shared our enthusiasm, especially for Kara’s story and how her search for her father would impact her mission to rebuild the Jedi Order.
The initial short film, set a thousand years after The Rise of Skywalker, took place in a time when the Jedi were almost gone. It followed Kara, whose father, a lightsaber maker named Lah Zhima, was captured by the Sith. Kara was tasked with delivering six new lightsabers to what she thought was a Jedi meeting, but she soon discovered it was actually a gathering of Sith in disguise. She managed to escape with a small group of real Jedi and began a journey to find her father. The story continues in “Child of Hope,” picking up less than a year later. Kara is attacked by Jedi hunters named Anda and Unda – a glimpse of the dangers to come in the series – before being saved by a service droid called Teto.
The animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions launched on Disney+ in 2021 and quickly became popular. A second season arrived in 2023, receiving even more praise from critics thanks to nine new episodes. This season continues the stories of beloved characters like Ronin from ‘The Duel’ and F from ‘The Village Brode’.
