Star Wars’ Best Villain Is Getting A Prequel, And It Looks Insanely Cool

One of the greatest villains is making their comeback, but with a catch.

Darth Maul, a notorious villain from the Star Wars universe, will be returning next year in a new animated series called Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. Before the series begins, Marvel Comics will release a five-issue comic book prequel, STAR WARS: SHADOW OF MAUL, to set the stage. The comic is written by Benjamin Percy, who previously worked on a Star Wars comic featuring Darth Maul, and illustrated by Madibek Musabekov, known for his work on Star Wars: Jedi Knights. According to Marvel, this is a new way to experience the character’s story.

Okay, so the new Star Wars series, Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, is gonna dive into Darth Maul’s backstory and how he tried to build up a criminal empire. Apparently, it takes place on this planet called Janix, which the Empire never really bothered with. From what I’ve read, we’ll meet some new characters too, like Captain Brander Lawson and his droid buddy, Two Boots, who are investigating some shady stuff happening on the planet. It sounds like it’s gonna fill in a lot of gaps about what Maul was up to!

Captain Brander Lawson finds himself stranded near the edge of the Empire’s territory on the planet Janix. With only his droid by his side, he must explore unknown lands as the threat of Darth Maul grows. Star Wars: Shadow of Maul expands on this situation and presents a brand new story in print.

What Has The Star Wars: Shadow Of Maul Team Said About The Comic So Far?

Percy, a self-described huge Star Wars fan, expressed his excitement for the upcoming Star Wars: Shadow of Maul comic. He previously enjoyed writing short stories set in the Star Wars universe, like Darth Maul – Black, White, and Red and Boba Fett – Black, White, and Red, but sees Shadow of Maul as a chance to tell a much larger story about a character he loves and offer a new perspective on the Star Wars galaxy.

Percy described the concept for Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, explaining that it blends science fiction with a crime story. He envisions a dark, gritty city filled with criminal gangs and hidden secrets, portraying it as a noir-style detective story. He’s collaborating with Madibek Musabeckov, a well-known Star Wars artist whose style perfectly captures the intended mood. They’ve been working closely with Lucasfilm, using scripts and episodes from the new animated series as inspiration, and their story will set the stage for events viewers will see on screen.

The new comic, Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, will be available on March 3, 2026, wherever comics are sold. You can pre-order it now through Marvel Comics.
