Brit Marling, known for her role as Prairie Johnson in The OA, has been cast in a significant part for an upcoming Star Trek series on Paramount+. She will be taking on a role previously played by the late Majel Barrett.
Aisling Marling will be the voice of the ship’s computer in the upcoming series Starfleet Academy. She will voice the computer on the U.S.S. Athena, which also functions as Starfleet Academy within the show. This role was previously held by Majel Barrett, who famously voiced the ship’s computer in Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager, and the Next Generation films. Barrett even made a special appearance in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 after her passing in 2023.
Brit Marling was a co-creator and star of the Netflix series The OA, contributing to ten episodes during its 2016-2019 run. She also co-created and starred in the mini-series A Murder at the End of the World, alongside Emma Corrin, Clive Owen, and Harris Dickinson. Her next project is Uncanny Valley, which she co-wrote with Natasha Lyonne, and will also star in – Lyonne directed the film.
The new series, Starfleet Academy, follows the first group of students to attend the academy in a century. Set in the same universe as the final seasons of Star Trek Discovery, the show stars Holly Hunter as Captain Nahla Ake, the academy’s chancellor. The cast also includes familiar faces like Robert Picardo and Tig Notaro, alongside newcomers Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, and Zoë Steiner. Guest stars will include Oded Fehr, Mary Wiseman, Tatiana Maslany, Gina Yashere, and Paul Giamatti.
Another Star Will Lend Their Voice to the New Trek Series
At New York Comic-Con in October, it was announced that He will be voicing the Digital Dean of Students on the show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. He jokingly described his role, saying he’d be making announcements like, “Ensign Krebs, your Talaxian fur fly has escaped the replicator and is reproducing. Report to Science Lab 1 immediately – there are children present!”
The creators of Starfleet Academy have discussed what it would take to make another show like theirs. According to co-showrunner Aaron Landau, it’s challenging to create Star Trek adventures with genuine risks and challenges while also keeping the setting a school. He emphasized the importance of showing viewers that the students face authentic Star Trek missions with real danger and complicated problems they must overcome.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will premiere on Paramount+ on Jan. 15, 2026.
