Star Trek’s Jeri Ryan Explains Why She Was Cool With Seven Of Nine’s ‘Sexy’ Catsuit On Voyager (At Least At The Time)

As the year ends and with new episodes of Star Trek not arriving until 2026, it’s a good moment to see what actors from older series are up to and hear their thoughts. Many did just that at the recent ST: CHI Trek To Chicago convention, where Jeri Ryan discussed her famous catsuit from Voyager.

Many fans pointed out strange or shocking moments in Star Trek: Voyager when it originally aired, but the controversy surrounding Seven of Nine’s revealing outfit seems to be discussed more now than it was then. Actress Jeri Ryan recently explained her feelings about being asked to play a character initially presented in a sexualized way, telling an audience (as reported by TrekMovie.com) why she was comfortable with it.

I participated in every costume fitting and discussion, so I fully understood the direction they were going with the character’s look. I was comfortable with the costume, even though it was revealing, because it fit the character’s personality as it was written. And it’s important to remember this was the 1990s. The character was actually the opposite of someone who would wear something like that [catsuit].

As the actress explained, Seven of Nine was a surprising character for television at the time. Instead of typical storylines about romance, her story focused on the trauma of being captured by the Borg as a child and her struggle to rebuild her identity after escaping their control.

Ryan continued, saying:

More On Star Trek: Voyager

I’m really excited to see Sulu and Tuvok from Voyager in Star Trek: Khan. The writer told me they felt including these characters was the most logical decision.

Ultimately, Star Trek: Voyager gave us one of the most memorable characters in Star Trek history, who later reappeared in Picard without her signature catsuit. The character proved so popular that Paramount asked Ryan to lead a new series after Picard concluded, but she declined, feeling it wasn’t what fans were hoping for.

Look, Jeri Ryan really got the initial idea for Seven of Nine, so I’m inclined to trust her instincts about what Star Trek fans are hoping for. It’s just frustrating because it seems like we’re a long way off from seeing “Star Trek: Legacy” happen. Paramount and Skydance seem to have different plans for where they want to take the franchise, and right now, that movie isn’t a priority.

Currently, Jeri Ryan doesn’t appear to be involved in the new plans for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which is set over 300 years in the future. A standalone movie is also in development, separate from existing Star Trek stories. However, since the Doctor – Seven’s former crewmate – is teaching at Starfleet Academy, I’m hoping we might see Seven appear as a hologram in an episode. We definitely need more of Jeri Ryan’s popular character, the Borg!

Paramount+ offers streaming plans starting at $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. You can enjoy classic shows like Star Trek: Voyager with either their Essential or Premium (ad-free) plan, costing $7.99 and $12.99 a month respectively. For the best value, consider an annual subscription to save money on your favorite entertainment.

You can currently stream episodes featuring Seven of Nine on Paramount+, from both Star Trek: Voyager and Picard. Seeing her in action is a great reminder of why she’s such a memorable science fiction character. I especially love her scenes with Naomi Wildman—the way Seven says Naomi’s name is always perfect!
