Since the fourth Star Trek movie has been canceled and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will finish in two years, the franchise faces a future where the adventures of Captain Kirk and Spock may be over.
Almost ten years after the release of Star Trek Beyond, Paramount and Skydance are no longer planning a fourth film featuring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and the crew of the USS Enterprise. According to Variety, Paramount is now looking to create a completely new Star Trek movie, signaling the end of the storyline that began with J.J. Abrams’ films in 2009.
Okay, so I was a little bummed to hear that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is wrapping up after season 5. They really nailed the younger versions of Spock and Kirk with Ethan Peck and Paul Wesley, and it feels like they’ve become the definitive takes on those characters – the ones that really connect to the original Spock and Kirk played by Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner. They’re filming that last season now, which is a bit sad, but hopefully, they’ll go out with a bang!
The fifth and last season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is expected to debut on Paramount+ in 2027. The show’s ending will set the stage for the beginning of Star Trek: The Original Series.
It’s uncertain what the future holds for Kirk and Spock, but while a new TV series is a possibility, it seems their time on the big screen has come to an end.
Star Trek 4 Is Dead & Ends Kirk & Spock’s Movies
As a huge Star Trek fan, I was really disappointed to hear that Paramount and Skydance are seemingly ending the story of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock in the movies. It feels like an era is truly over! Thinking about the film series, it’s amazing to realize that, aside from the four Next Generation movies, every other Star Trek film has centered around two different iterations of Kirk and Spock. They’ve really been the heart of the franchise for so long.
From 1979 to 1991, the original Star Trek films centered around the characters of Admiral/Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, and Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy. In 2009, J.J. Abrams reimagined the series with a new cast: Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. They reprised their roles in the subsequent films, Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016).
For many movie fans, both old and new, Star Trek means Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and their adventures aboard the Starship Enterprise. Star Trek: The Next Generation became very popular and temporarily replaced the original characters in the 1990s, but that series ended with the unsuccessful film Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002. When the franchise was rebooted, J.J. Abrams brought Kirk and Spock back to the forefront, revitalizing the series.
Creating a new Star Trek movie without its iconic captains – Kirk, Spock, or even Picard – presents a major challenge for Paramount and Skydance. The next film will need to be a bold, fresh take on the franchise, as it can’t rely on the established popularity of those familiar characters.
While it’s possible we could see another Star Trek movie with a new Kirk and Spock, that doesn’t seem to be the direction Paramount and Skydance are heading with their current plans.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5 Will End Kirk & Spock On TV
The show Star Trek: Discovery faced some criticism during its first season, but things changed in 2018 with season 2, which brought in Ethan Peck as Spock. Four years after that, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds introduced Paul Wesley as Lieutenant James T. Kirk, and Wesley had previously portrayed different versions of Kirk in other stories.
Though Star Trek: Strange New Worlds focuses on Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his adventures aboard the Starship Enterprise, the show is also deliberately developing the close bond between Kirk and Spock, setting the stage for their future roles on Star Trek: The Original Series.
As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m really bummed to hear that season 5 will be the last for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It means we’re saying goodbye to Ethan Peck and Paul Wesley as Spock and Kirk, and it feels like the end of a really great chapter for these iconic characters on Paramount+. It’s been amazing seeing them bring Kirk and Spock back to life, and it’s sad to think we won’t get to see more of their adventures together.
The team behind Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, have publicly expressed their interest in creating a new show focused on the early days of Captain Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Spock (Ethan Peck). This potential series, tentatively titled Star Trek: Year One, would explore their first year commanding the USS Enterprise.
Currently, Star Trek: Year One is just a hopeful concept, similar to other proposed shows like Michael Sussman’s idea for a Scott Bakula return in Star Trek: United, and Star Trek: Legacy, which would have continued the story from Star Trek: Picard season 3. As of now, there are no signs that Paramount+ will move forward with any of these projects.
Okay, so I’m hearing that when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wraps up – currently projected for 2027 – it might also be the final chapter for this latest take on Kirk and Spock. Think about it: we’ve had Shatner and Nimoy, then Pine and Quinto, and it sounds like this current iteration could be the last. It’s a bit sad to think about, but unless something unexpected happens, that’s the word on the street.
Will Star Trek Reboot Kirk & Spock Again?
If Paul Wesley and Ethan Peck stop playing Kirk and Spock after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it’s likely that Star Trek television will eventually recast those roles with new actors in a future series.
Star Trek might be about to undergo its biggest changes since 2017, when Star Trek: Discovery first aired and revitalized the franchise. That revival led to a wave of new shows, including Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Section 31, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Alex Kurtzman’s production company, Secret Hideout, has been in charge of the Star Trek TV shows on Paramount+ since 2017. However, their contract ends in 2026, and Paramount Skydance might decide to take the franchise in a new direction with different leadership after that.
The future of Star Trek may change after 2027. With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds expected to conclude, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy potentially ending after its second season, the franchise could look quite different.
Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock are the most iconic figures in Star Trek, and Captain Picard came the closest to reaching their level of popularity. They’re so central to the show’s identity that it’s difficult to picture Star Trek without them, but the future might see the franchise moving in a different direction.
As a huge Star Trek fan, I remember when The Next Generation first aired – it felt like a real reimagining of the franchise, proving it could thrive without Kirk and Spock. Honestly, it’s been tough for Star Trek to recapture that magic since then. While Paramount+ has given us a lot of new Star Trek, nothing has quite reached the same level of widespread love and devotion that TNG earned.
With the cancellation of Star Trek 4 and the planned conclusion of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the future of Star Trek is uncertain. It will be a completely new era for the franchise, venturing into truly unknown territory.
