I needed to inquire about this since I was pleased that the “Trek” series avoided the body horror elements associated with the Vezda. Fortunately, co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers provided insight as to why they chose to develop a romantic storyline between Pike and Batel, and the specific episode from “The Next Generation” that served as their inspiration for executing it successfully.

Why Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Didn’t Worry About Pike’s Future With Vina

In the three-season run of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Captain Pike could have been in a romantic relationship with Captain Batel, but things change when he appears in the original series. As many fans recall, following his transfer of command to James T. Kirk, an unfortunate training accident leaves Pike with reduced abilities, forcing him into a machine for survival and rendering him unable to speak.

In “The Menagerie,” Spock assists his ex-Captain by transporting him to Talos IV, a planet they had previously encountered during the original pilot for Star Trek titled “The Cage.” On this planet, Pike is able to leave behind his physical form and enjoy a normal existence alongside Vina, a woman he met during their initial visit.

In simpler terms, the show “Strange New Worlds” is set in a time period sandwiched by “The Cage” and “The Menagerie.” This makes it challenging to believe Captain Pike would be content spending the rest of his days with a woman he had just a brief relationship with, considering he had spent his entire life with Batel between these encounters. Akiva Goldsman, when discussing the creation of the Pike-Batel storyline, explained that they didn’t focus heavily on Vina because of their main narrative goals for the show.

I find the character Vina intriguing and her design suggests a strong adherence to established Star Trek themes. However, she differs significantly from Pike as depicted in The Cage and The Menagerie. The reuse of footage introduces complications to the series’ continuity.

Assuming that Christopher Pike has some form of consciousness after losing his original abilities, we might explore what that could mean for Vina or even Batel. But it seems the show won’t delve into those possibilities. Instead, we will focus on a different interpretation of the future events involving these characters.

It’s tough to dispute that reasoning, and Goldsman certainly brings up a valid observation. Perhaps it’s worth considering critiques when we encounter instances like the one in “The Menagerie,” where characters in the Star Trek universe are viewing footage from another Star Trek episode within their own world.

Moreover, since Strange New Worlds appears to be wrapping up after Season 5, it seems unlikely that the series will have an opportunity to reimagine Captain Pike’s storyline or alter anything set in the original series (despite potential spin-offs). Consequently, they decided to focus on aspects within their control, specifically a romance that began and ended within the boundaries of their show.

Strange New Worlds Sought Inspiration From The Inner Light For Season 3 Finale

Even though “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” didn’t prioritize the return of Vina, it was necessary for the series to handle and conclude the Batel storyline in a way that did not involve her when the original series began. One might wonder why she was included in the show at all. Akiva Goldsman clarified that they introduced Vina into the narrative for specific reasons, and during the resolution of her arc with Captain Pike, they drew inspiration from “The Next Generation” to provide a fitting conclusion.

In simpler terms, as those responsible for shaping Chris Pike’s life, we desired for him to find genuine love, but unfortunately, we couldn’t provide it in real-time. In a sense similar to how Henry would express things, we chose to use a structure akin to ‘The Inner Light’ to offer him a chance to experience enrichment. However, as is often our way, we eventually took that opportunity away from his grasp.

For individuals who haven’t watched it yet, “The Inner Light” is often regarded as one of the finest episodes from Star Trek: The Next Generation. In this storyline, Captain Jean-Luc Picard falls into a coma after an alien device affects him, and during his unconscious state, he lives out an entire lifetime as a man named Kamin, a farmer on a distant planet. This narrative explores what his life might have been like if he hadn’t joined Starfleet.

I’m Just Now Realizing Something About Star Trek’s Latest Announcements That Has Me Concerned

From my perspective, it’s quite evident how the same idea was applied in “New Life and New Civilizations,” where Batel and Pike managed to experience a full lifespan together, despite only a minimal amount of time elapsing in the real world. To me, it could seem heartbreaking, as Pike was shown a life that was never truly his, a life he would’ve never lived under normal circumstances.

From my perspective, some may view our meeting as a fortunate occurrence, considering his future was already determined and that life was unlikely to be within his reach. Even if our paths hadn’t crossed with the Vezda, there was no certainty that Batel and Pike would survive until the day of his life-altering accident. Looking back now, it might have been a blessing and an opportunity for him to live a life he wouldn’t have had otherwise – much like the classic tale from TNG.

As for “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” production for Season 4 remains ongoing during post-production, with plans to start filming Season 5 in late September as suggested by Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. The team is pushing hard until the series is completed, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that they get some downtime between shooting and editing days.
