Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! While the show has been renewed for a second season, we already have a good idea of what’s to come. Even though some questions remain about the new episodes, careful viewers of Season 1 and comments from the people involved offer many clues. Despite being a somewhat controversial series, Starfleet Academy isn’t finished yet.
The new series Starfleet Academy is set 300 years in the future of Star Trek, fulfilling a long-held wish among fans. However, framing it as a spin-off of Discovery wasn’t popular with everyone. Despite this, the show’s many nods to older Star Trek series have gradually won over even critical viewers. Since the first season also served as a celebration of Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary, it’s unclear whether the second season will include as many hidden references and inside jokes.
‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Season 2 Is Confirmed (& Production Has Wrapped)

Paramount+
In late 2024, Paramount confirmed that a second season of Starfleet Academy was in development, meaning fans knew about its return over a year before the first season premiered in January 2026. Filming for Season 2 actually finished while the initial episodes of Season 1 were still being released each week. Like the first season, the upcoming season will consist of 10 episodes. While a third season hasn’t been officially announced, it remains a possibility.
With the recent wrap-up of Season 2, it’s been about ten years since there weren’t any new Star Trek shows in production. While episodes of Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds are already finished and ready to air, there aren’t any current plans to create more content. Given that most cadets train for four years, Starfleet Academy is designed to tell its complete story over four seasons, and how well Season 2 performs will likely determine if the show gets renewed.
‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2‘s Release Window

Paramount+
Season 1 of Starfleet Academy finished filming in early 2025 and debuted about a year later. Because the show relies heavily on visual effects, post-production takes a significant amount of time. Therefore, Season 2 is expected to follow a similar timeline. While there’s no official release date yet, early 2027 seems like a likely timeframe. Given the limited amount of new Star Trek content besides Strange New Worlds, it’s also possible the release of Starfleet Academy Season 2 episodes could be delayed to extend the franchise’s current run.
Looking ahead, I anticipate the next ten episodes of Starfleet Academy will likely be released one episode per week, similar to how Season 1 was rolled out. While the first episode was a double-length premiere, sticking to a weekly release schedule helped keep the show consistently visible. This is the typical strategy for Star Trek shows on streaming platforms, though they sometimes experiment with releasing multiple episodes at once. Considering Strange New Worlds is the only other Star Trek series with upcoming episodes, continuing with weekly releases will keep the franchise relevant for a longer period compared to releasing an entire season all at once.
What ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Season 2 Will Be About

Paramount+
Season 2 will likely follow a similar path to Season 1, focusing on the cadets’ continued training at Starfleet Academy throughout the ten new episodes. Paul Giamatti’s character won’t be back after being captured in the Season 1 finale, and a new antagonist is expected to challenge the cadets, though details haven’t been officially announced.
As a huge fan of Starfleet Academy, I was really intrigued by something George Hawkins, one of the actors, recently shared in an interview with CinemaBlend. He hinted that his character, Darem Reymi, goes through a massive change throughout Season 2. He specifically said the Darem we see at the beginning is almost unrecognizable by the end! It sounds like Darem is going to have a really compelling arc when the show comes back, and honestly, I can’t wait to see how it unfolds.
‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Season 2 Cast

Like most Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy likely won’t have major cast changes for Season 2. We should expect to see the same main characters return. According to TVInsider, Paul Giamatti won’t reprise his role as Nus Braka in the new season. This is understandable, as his storyline felt complete at the end of Season 1, though producer Alex Kurtzman has hinted he might reappear if there’s a Season 3. It’s currently unknown whether Tatiana Maslany will return as Anisha Mir for Season 2.

Season 1 of Starfleet Academy featured two memorable guest stars: Mary Wiseman as Lt. Sylvia Tilly and Tawny Newsome as Illa Dax. While each only appeared in one episode, fans hope they’ll return in Season 2. Both actresses have expressed interest in returning, and Illa Dax’s role as an Academy professor leaves the door open. There’s also potential for other actors from Discovery to make guest appearances in Season 2, along with new, currently unannounced cast members who will likely play temporary roles.
