As a huge Star Trek fan, I was really touched by the latest episode of Starfleet Academy, “The Life of the Stars.” It was so great to see Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) back – she really brings a sense of hope and helps everyone heal, and this time, she does it through the power of theater! The episode, written by Gaia Violo & Jane Maggs and directed by Andi Armaganian, deals with some heavy stuff, like loss, but it’s ultimately a really uplifting and special installment. It especially focuses on Series Acclimation Mil (Kerrice Brooks), and it feels like a true turning point for her character – a real rebirth, if you will.
In the sixth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Tilly tries to help Tarima Sadal, Caleb Mir, Genesis Lythe, Darem Reymi, Jay-Den Kraag, and Ocam Sadal work through their trauma from the USS Miyazaki by having them study Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town.” Initially, her idea isn’t well-received.
The Doctor and Captain Ake travel to SAM’s home planet, Kasq, hoping to fix her critical malfunction. Unfortunately, SAM’s creators can’t repair her because her programming has become too advanced for them to comprehend. Determined to save her, The Doctor makes a bold move to revive SAM himself.
“Our Town” Heals & Bonds Starfleet Academy’s Cadets
Tarima is deeply affected by the play “Our Town.” As an empath, she understands why SAM chose her to play Emily, a character who dies and becomes a spirit. After recovering from a coma – caused by a fellow cadet using psychic powers to protect her and her friends in the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6 – Tarima discovers she’s lost control of her own destiny.
Tarima didn’t want to attend Starfleet Academy; she’d rather have gone back to War College. At Caleb’s school, she felt overlooked and sensed her classmates were afraid of her. As an empath, Tarima understands the bond between Caleb and Genesis, a connection established in episode 7 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Despite this, she doesn’t blame her Dar-Sha roommate, who is kind and represents the stability and peace Tarima longs for but believes she’ll never achieve.
Lieutenant Tilly realized the injured cadets needed space, so she let them watch “Our Town.” In a recent interview with ScreenRant, executive producer and co-writer Gaia Violo described how watching the play is a “healing experience” that helps the cadets cope with their personal struggles and the trauma they’ve all experienced.
When thinking about truly great stories, “Our Town” offers a beautiful example of simplicity. It captured the essence of what it means to be human, focusing on everyday moments that unexpectedly become meaningful and lasting. This resonated with the character of Sam, who exists as a holographic representation of starlight – essentially, an immortal being.
Tarima embodies the experiences we all share, and throughout the episode, we see how she and another cadet become central figures – both the focus and the community supporting them. Working with co-writer Jane Maggs, we aimed to beautifully explore this dynamic and tell a story about healing, particularly for these two young women and, by extension, all the cadets.
Concerned about their friend SAM, Caleb, Genesis, Darem, Jay-Den, and Ocam started discussing the play and what it all meant. Tarima joined them, and together, these Starfleet Academy cadets found comfort and understanding in each other’s company. They welcomed Tarima into their group and were overjoyed when SAM finally returned.
SAM Is Reborn With 2 Lifetimes Of Memories
In the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6, SAM was hit with a phaser blast from the Furies. Even after repairs during the Academy’s All-Worlds Day break, she kept secret that she was still malfunctioning. Later, on Kasq, The Makers and Captain Ake discovered that the ongoing effects of the phaser blast were fatally damaging SAM.
The Makers shut down SAM because they couldn’t explain how she had developed over her 209 days at Starfleet Academy. But Captain Ake convinced The Doctor to take on the role of SAM’s father and raise her on the planet Kasq, where time flows much slower – two weeks there are equivalent to seventeen years on Earth.
By raising Sam as his daughter for the first seventeen years of her new life, the Doctor gave her a unique understanding of organic life, shaped by personal experience – something she couldn’t have gained before.
Okay, so Sam’s back at school in San Francisco, but things are… complicated. She’s grappling with two completely different childhoods. On one hand, she remembers her first 209 days as a Starfleet Academy cadet, and on the other, she has all the memories of being raised by her dad, The Doctor. It’s a really interesting setup, and I’m eager to see how they explore this dual existence.
The Doctor Becomes SAM’s Father & Heals From His Star Trek: Voyager Loss
I’ve always been fascinated by the EMH’s story arc. It was really moving to see him finally step up and become a father to SAM. For a long time, ever since they first met in the premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, he kept pushing her away, even though she clearly looked up to him and wanted him to be a mentor. It was tough to watch, honestly, but seeing him embrace his role as her father felt like a natural, if hard-earned, progression.
Nahla understands The Doctor’s suffering because she herself experiences endless pain and regret as an immortal. The Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) confessed to Captain Ake that he’s afraid, and that he distanced himself from SAM because he couldn’t forget the heartbreak of losing Belle, his holographic daughter (played by Lindsay Haun).
In a memorable episode of Star Trek: Voyager called “Real Life,” the character The Doctor experienced what it was like to be a father to a holographic family. Tragedy struck when his holographic daughter, Belle, suffered a fatal brain injury. The Doctor felt the grief of her loss as powerfully as if it had just occurred, even though it happened 800 years prior. Despite the pain, he realized he could offer a fresh start for both his son, SAM, and himself, giving them the second chance they deserved.
In just two weeks, The Doctor rapidly raised SAM, a newly created lifeform, from infancy to the equivalent of a 17-year-old. This experience brought him a joy he’d never known, as he became a father to her. After returning to Starfleet Academy, The Doctor continued his life as SAM’s father, bringing a satisfying conclusion to his 29-year story arc on Star Trek: Voyager.
Will Tilly Return To Starfleet Academy?
Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly recently appeared alongside Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro), enjoying a drink with Captain Nahla Ake. This appearance has fans wondering if Tilly will join the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Many expected Tilly to be a key character in the Starfleet Academy series, given her important role in re-establishing Starfleet Academy within Star Trek: Discovery.
In the eighth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, we learn that Tilly continues to teach at the Academy, now working with third-year cadets in the Beta Quadrant. These cadets may be the same group she encountered during season four of Star Trek: Discovery. Her primary role is as an instructor for these cadets, which is why she isn’t stationed with the main faculty in San Francisco.
Although Tilly probably won’t appear in the last two episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, the second-year cadets might need her help again in season 2. If Paramount+ orders a third season, the show could focus on the cadets training with Tilly in the Beta Quadrant.
