Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Reveals Paul Giamatti’s New Villain

A new live-action Star Trek series from Paramount+ will focus on the next class of Starfleet cadets. The show premieres on January 15, 2026, and a first look clip has just been released.

A four-minute preview of Starfleet Academy was shown at a Paramount+ event during CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil. It was also released on the official Paramount+ and Star Trek YouTube channels, and quickly gained over 80,000 views in under 24 hours.

The recently released clip shows the starship U.S.S. Athena, part of Starfleet Academy, under attack. On the bridge, we see Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) alongside a Jem Hadar officer (Gina Yashere), whom Ake addresses as “Number One.” A mysterious substance is overtaking the ship, prompting the digital dean of students to order all crew and cadets back to their quarters as the ship goes on high alert. You can watch the clip here.

Fans of Star Trek will be happy to see Robert Picardo return as the Holographic Doctor, a role he famously played in Star Trek: Voyager and Prodigy. The clip also reveals the show’s primary villain – a Klingon/Tellarite hybrid – as the source of the central conflict. He confronts Captain Ake, whom he hasn’t seen in fifteen years, with a pointed, “Payback’s a bh.”

Fans reacted enthusiastically in the comments section of the YouTube video. One user, @mattblom3390, wrote that they enjoyed seeing the Doctor in a more active, physical role and believed it showed Robert Picardo was still a strong performer. Another commenter, @madmonk3030, praised Paul Giamatti’s over-the-top and impressive performance.

Some viewers weren’t sure how well the show would fit into the broader Star Trek universe. One commenter, @Rah84eem, said it initially felt like a parody of Star Trek, with acting and dialogue that didn’t quite feel right, comparing it to Harry Potter in space. @saulzmon admitted they weren’t the target audience but hoped others would enjoy it. Another viewer, @fighterpilot12, noted the trailers drew comparisons to teen dramas like Dawson’s Creek or One Tree Hill, but they enjoyed the clip, especially after recently rewatching Voyager.

Real ‘Star Trek Peril’ in Starfleet Academy

At New York Comic-Con in October, the show’s creator explained that the series throws its young characters into challenging situations as a way for them to learn and grow, comparing it to the hands-on training in a teaching hospital. He stated, “You can only learn by getting thrown into the fire.” Co-creator Noga Landau added that it’s crucial for viewers to understand these students face genuine Star Trek missions with real danger and complicated problems they must overcome.

The first look at Starfleet Academy seems to confirm what its creators have said – the show features real danger for its characters. Starfleet Academy will center on a group of diverse cadets as they train to become Starfleet officers, navigating friendships, competition, and romantic relationships. The series takes place during the same time frame as the last three seasons of Star Trek: Discovery.

The new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will begin streaming on Paramount+ on January 15, 2026. Each new episode will be released weekly, with the final episode arriving on March 12, 2026.
