Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Fails to Make Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming List

I’m really disappointed to hear that the newest Star Trek show didn’t crack the top 10 streaming list on Nielsen, even after being eligible for two weeks now. It’s starting to worry me – these numbers aren’t what we hoped for, and I’m concerned about the show’s future.

Once more, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy had strong competition from major streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Other popular original shows in the top 10 included 11.22.63, a Stephen King adaptation from a decade ago that recently saw a surge in popularity on the platform.

Streaming performance for Star Trek has been uneven. While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds quickly gained popularity, it took its earlier series, Star Trek: Discovery, longer to attract a significant audience.

Similarly, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy hasn’t appeared on Paramount+’s list of most popular shows. While there was initial excitement for the series, that interest has been declining.

Filming for the series is already complete. Unless Paramount and Skydance need to claim a large tax loss, we can expect more Starfleet Academy on Paramount+. However, if the show continues to be absent from the Nielsen ratings, its chances of getting a third season will become increasingly uncertain.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Ratings Trouble Continues

Beyond the somewhat underwhelming critical scores, there’s a significant difference between how critics and general audiences are reacting to the series. While Rotten Tomatoes has given it a “Certified Fresh” label with 88% positive reviews from critics, viewers only give it a 42% approval rating. This disparity raises questions about the show’s long-term success.

With Paramount’s recent ownership change and the potential departure of Alex Kurtzman from overseeing the Star Trek franchise, the future of Starfleet Academy is unclear, despite a second season already being filmed. However, Star Trek has a history of bringing back beloved characters and storylines long after their original runs. Characters from The Original Series returned a decade after its conclusion, and the Next Generation crew reunited three decades after TNG ended. Each new creative team adds to the existing Star Trek universe, building on the work of those who came before. Based on its first six episodes, Starfleet Academy appears poised to lay a solid groundwork for another 60 years of Star Trek storytelling.

As a huge Trek fan, I’m really excited about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. From what I understand, it’s going to follow a group of young cadets as they try to make it through the Academy. It sounds like we’ll see them forge friendships, deal with rivalries, and experience all the firsts of young adulthood – first loves and everything. But it won’t all be fun and games; apparently, a new threat emerges that puts both the Academy and the Federation in danger. I’m definitely tuning in to see how it all unfolds!

I’m really excited about the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! We’ve got Holly Hunter playing the chancellor, which is fantastic, and a whole new group of cadets brought to life by Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard. Plus, it’s great to see familiar faces like Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, and Robert Picardo returning to the Trek universe. And get this – Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman are guest starring, with Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti popping up as recurring guests. It’s shaping up to be a really strong ensemble!

New episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy debut on Thursdays on Paramount+.
