Okay, so I just finished watching the finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – “Rubincon” – and wow! It turns out that Nus Braka, even with Paul Giamatti playing him, isn’t the biggest power player in the Federation after all. The episode, directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and written by Alex Kurtzman, Kirsten Beyer, Noga Landau, and Gaia Violo, showed how Starfleet Academy itself managed to stop his plan to take down the Federation. It was a really surprising reveal!
In the season one finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Nus Braka nearly destroyed the Federation. By planting Omega-47 mines, the Klingon pirate put the entire Federation at risk. If he had succeeded, billions would have died and warp travel would have been impossible for millennia.
Nus Braka was driven by a personal desire for revenge against his enemy, Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter). He planned to use Anisha Mir (Tatiana Maslany) to publicly shame Nahla and establish himself as the galaxy’s next leader after the Federation’s collapse. His actions also revealed the identity of the current Federation President in an episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Confirms Laira Rillak Is Still Federation President
In the season one finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Nus Braka put Captain Nahla Ake and the Federation on trial. This trial was different from other Star Trek courtroom episodes because Braka held it publicly and broadcast it across the galaxy. During the Venari Ral’s broadcast, viewers saw on-screen graphics confirming that Laira Rillak (played by Chelah Horsdal) remains the President of the Federation.
President Rillak appeared at the start of season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery shortly after being elected. As a unique hybrid of human, Bajoran, and Cardassian heritage, she had the challenging job of helping the Federation recover after the devastating event known as The Burn. Early in her presidency, she was immediately confronted with a major crisis when a Dark Matter Anomaly destroyed the planet Kwejian and put the Federation in danger.
Initially, President Rillak questioned Captain Michael Burnham’s approach to things. He closely monitored her work on the USS Discovery while they investigated the DMA. But by the end of the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery, Burnham earned Rillak’s trust and admiration. Rillak went on to appear in two more episodes of the show’s fifth season.
Throughout the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Admiral Charles Vance frequently mentioned the “President” but never said Laira Rillak’s name, and the President wasn’t shown on screen. Since Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place in 3192, after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, President Rillak is in the third year of her four-year term leading the Federation.
The Federation After The Burn Continues To Change Under President Rillak
As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m really enjoying how they’re building on the aftermath of The Burn in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. It’s cool to see President Rillak leading the Federation’s recovery and growth. Bringing Starfleet Academy back to Earth felt like a really powerful move, a way to remind everyone what the Federation stands for and inspire a new, hopeful group of officers.
In the second episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Admiral Vance successfully negotiated an agreement with Betazed, representing President Rillak. President Rillak then authorized Vance’s proposal to construct the new Federation headquarters on Betazed, earning the support of Betazed’s President, Emerin Sadal, played by Anthony Natale.
During the final episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season one, President Rillak visited Betazed to officially open the new Federation headquarters. This suggests that Rillak has moved to Betazed. She then held a private dinner to honor the Starfleet cadets and officers who successfully defended the Federation against the threat from Nus Braka, though Cadet Caleb Mir worried about following proper dinner etiquette.
When President Rillak seeks re-election, Laira will be able to point to a strong record: she guided the Federation through the difficult period following The Burn, brought United Earth, Ni’Var, and Betazed back into the Federation, and recently achieved victory over the Venari Ral, culminating in the capture of Nus Braka.
We might see President Rillak return in season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and have another meeting with Chancellor Nahla Ake.
