Michael Dorn, famous for his roles in the various Star Trek series – including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Picard – and films, recently explained why he avoided the set for a long time. Many fans may not know that Dorn is also a director, having directed three episodes of Deep Space Nine.
Michael Dorn directed one episode of Star Trek: Enterprise – the 25th episode of its first season, titled “Two Days and Two Nights.” He never directed another episode of Star Trek because a producer at the time misled him.
Michael Dorn revealed on The D-Con Chamber podcast, co-hosted by Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating of Star Trek: Enterprise, that he originally agreed to direct several episodes of the show as part of his contract. However, a Star Trek producer informed him he wouldn’t be asked to direct any further episodes because another individual intensely disliked working with him on the episode “Two Days and Two Nights.”
The situation arose—and it’s interesting to note—that when our last Star Trek film, Nemesis, was released, we weren’t under contract for it. So, during negotiations—and this is a fact—I read the script and wasn’t pleased with it. My main concern was that Worf didn’t have much to do in the story, as I recall.
He explained that when asked what he wanted, he’d said he wanted to direct. He was initially offered the chance to direct three or four episodes of Enterprise, but the deal was structured so he’d only be guaranteed one episode, with the others contingent on production needs. He regretted not insisting on a full guarantee for all episodes. He ended up directing just one episode and received payment to cover the remaining three that weren’t produced.
It was really upsetting to think they felt I’d done such a poor job, to the point where they didn’t want me directing any more episodes of Enterprise. My agents tried to find out what happened, and the producers claimed Scott Bakula didn’t like working with Michael. That’s completely untrue, and that’s why I wasn’t asked back to direct.
Scott Bakula Hating Michael Dorn on Star Trek: Enterprise Was a Lie
Both Trinneer and Keating were surprised to hear anyone suggest Bakula would say that. Dorn backed them up, confirming he’d spoken with Bakula and the story wasn’t true.
I spoke with Scott, and he was visiting Patrick Stewart in London. We had a great time together. I already knew the rumors weren’t true; Scott and all the actors on Enterprise were true professionals, and there wasn’t any drama happening behind the scenes.
It’s unclear why the Star Trek producer brought up Scott Bakula when explaining why Michael Dorn wasn’t asked to direct more episodes of Enterprise. Thankfully, it seems Bakula and Dorn have resolved any issues between them since then.
Star Trek: Enterprise is streaming now on Paramount+.
