‘Star Trek: Picard’ Never Confirmed ‘Voyager’s Alternate Future Captain La Forge Reveal

Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard brought LeVar Burton back as Geordi La Forge after more than two decades, and it was wonderful to see him with the rest of The Next Generation cast. However, I was hoping the show would definitively address a somewhat unclear part of Geordi’s history in Starfleet. Hints about this have appeared elsewhere in the Star Trek universe, but none of them provide conclusive evidence.

Geordi La Forge’s life is well-documented in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the four films that continued the story. After that, details about his experiences become scarce – until the show Picard. While fans can piece together some of what happened using their knowledge of Star Trek, much of his story relies on speculation. That’s why his return in Picard’s final season was so anticipated. However, the series didn’t fully address a major question about his life, even though the answer had actually been shown briefly in an earlier Star Trek series.

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Didn’t Establish Whether Geordi Actually Became Captain La Forge of the USS Challenger

In Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, LeVar Burton’s character, Geordi La Forge, has the rank of commodore, which is higher than a captain but lower than an admiral. This rank isn’t usually needed in Starfleet. Commodores essentially handle the responsibilities of both captains and admirals. Geordi’s specific job as a commodore is curator of the Starfleet Museum, where he oversees the maintenance and preservation of retired starships. The commodore rank is often given to officers who are in charge of multiple ships, which fits Geordi’s role perfectly, given the number of vessels at the museum.

Not every captain becomes a commodore, but every commodore was once a captain. Interestingly, Geordi La Forge has only been shown as a captain in one instance: a brief appearance in the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Timeless.” However, the events of that episode were ultimately erased from the timeline by the Voyager crew. Before returning in the Picard series in 2023, Geordi’s last official appearance was as a lieutenant commander in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. This means that throughout the official Star Trek canon, we’ve never seen Geordi as either a commander or a captain.

The events of “Timeless” altered the main Star Trek timeline, preventing the USS Voyager from crashing when it finally returned to the Alpha Quadrant.

The final season of Picard had a lot to cover, so it wasn’t surprising that the show didn’t delve deeply into what each Enterprise crew member had been doing since Nemesis. However, it would have been easy for the showrunner, Terry Matalas, to have Geordi mention his time commanding the Challenger. Instead, we’re left to speculate about what happened to Burton’s character after Nemesis – whether he continued to captain the Challenger following the time changes in “Timeless,” or if he took command of a different ship.

Geordi La Forge may never have become a captain, potentially bypassing the rank altogether. This is a bit strange, and the fact that he’s still wearing a yellow Starfleet uniform—indicating he’s still in Operations—supports this idea. Typically, a captain would wear a red uniform by the time of Picard Season 3. However, the show might have kept his uniform yellow to make him look more like his familiar self from The Next Generation after being away from the series for a while. Regardless, it seems like a deliberate and significant choice.

Why Geordi Probably Was Still the USS Challenger’s Captain After ‘Voyager’s “Timeless”

When fans talk about official ‘Star Trek’ storylines, they’re referring to the movies and TV shows. Most of the animated series also fit into the main story. The exceptions are ‘Star Trek: Scouts’ and ‘Star Trek: Very Short Treks’. While ‘Star Trek’ has expanded into novels, comics, and video games – many of which are excellent – these aren’t considered official canon. However, these expanded stories can still be valuable and worth considering.

While Captain Geordi La Forge briefly appeared in live-action in the episode “Timeless,” that moment didn’t have much lasting impact. Since then, LeVar Burton has continued to voice the character, notably reprising his role in the 2010 Star Trek Online video game, where he captains the USS Challenger – missions featuring this are still available to play. Furthermore, Geordi is assigned to the Challenger in the 2011 novel Indistinguishable from Magic, even if just as a temporary second officer. These appearances suggest that the Star Trek franchise intends for the Challenger to play a significant role in Geordi La Forge’s future.

Regarding the alternate timeline in “Timeless,” there’s no strong reason to believe events couldn’t still play out similarly to how they did after Voyager returned. While changes to the past can have ripple effects, it’s not far-fetched to imagine Voyager’s safe arrival didn’t actually prevent Geordi La Forge from eventually becoming captain of the Challenger. “Timeless” is set in 2390, and Picard Season 3 takes place only eleven years later in 2401 – plenty of time for Geordi to be promoted from commander to captain and then to commodore after the events of Nemesis in 2379. I can see why Picard didn’t delve into this possibility, but a simple mention of it would have been nice.
