Be warned, this contains spoilers for the eighth episode of Star Trek: Khan, titled “Original Sin.” The episode finally explains what caused the destruction of Ceti Alpha VI, the planet where Khan Noonien Singh (played by Ricardo Montalban) was exiled after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.
I remember watching The Wrath of Khan and learning how Kirk sent Khan and his crew to Ceti Alpha V. It was supposed to be a new start for them, but it turned out to be a disaster! Six months later, Ceti Alpha VI, a nearby planet, blew up, and the explosion completely wrecked Ceti Alpha V too. It was a really tragic turn of events for everyone stranded there.
Star Trek: Khan expanded on the backstory of Khan (Naveen Andrews) and his banishment by explaining that the destruction of Ceti Alpha VI also affected a group of psychic aliens called the Elboreans. They ended up on Ceti Alpha V, where Khan and their leader, Delmonda, formed an alliance to stay alive.
Khan thought Captain Kirk was aware that Ceti Alpha VI would destroy itself, but the eighth episode of Star Trek: Khan showed the real reason for the planet’s explosion – and it wasn’t Kirk’s doing.
Star Trek: Khan Reveals What Destroyed Ceti Alpha VI

The big reveal in Star Trek: Khan episode 8 is that the Elboreans were responsible for the destruction of Ceti Alpha VI. While the planet’s core was already weak, it wasn’t going to explode until the Elboreans arrived in the system.
The Elboreans’ spaceship had a drive that compressed space, but it broke down. When the engines failed, Delmonda directed the excess energy towards Ceti Alpha VI, causing the planet to explode almost immediately.
Delmonda kept a secret from Khan until the eighth episode of Star Trek: Khan, which caused a rift in their relationship and ended the partnership between the Augments and the Elboreans.
As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I’ve always felt Kirk got a bad rap for what happened on Ceti Alpha VI. The show, particularly in season 8 of Star Trek: Khan, really clarifies things with Dr. Rosalind Lear acknowledging that Kirk genuinely didn’t know the planet would become unstable. He exiled Khan and his followers to Ceti Alpha V believing it was habitable – he acted in good faith, and it wasn’t his fault the planet turned out to be a disaster.
Khan is right to point out that Captain Kirk didn’t follow up to see how things were going, and this is why Khan doesn’t trust Starfleet. It also explains why he never asked them for help or tried to be rescued.
Khan’s Daughter Escapes Ceti Alpha V Theory Explained

The eighth episode of Star Trek: Khan takes place five years after the death of Lt. Marla McGivers (played by Wrenn Schmidt) and the birth of her daughter, Kali. Khan has chosen Kali to be one of the four crew members aboard the Elboreans’ starship, which they are using to search for help.
You know, as I understand it, Khan isn’t actually trying to help his people or even the colonists on Ceti Alpha V. It’s all about survival for him and his daughter, Kali. He’s planning to find a new planet where they can start over, just the two of them.
As seen in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Khan is left on Ceti Alpha V, and he never says anything about having a daughter. This implies that Kali managed to leave the planet without him, traveling with Delmonda instead of her father.
Considering everything, it seems highly probable that Dr. Rosalind Lear is actually the grown-up Kali. It’s possible that Delmonda and the Eldoreans erased her memories of Ceti Alpha V, and may have also altered Khan’s mind to make him forget his daughter.
Okay, so everything about Dr. Lear suddenly clicks into place when you realize Delmonda was the one who supplied those Ceti Alpha V recordings. It explains so much – her clear dislike of Kirk, and even Rosalind’s relentless drive to uncover what really happened to Khan and Marla McGivers on that ill-fated planet. It’s a beautifully neat connection that ties everything together.
Just one more episode of Star Trek: Khan will reveal the answers to the lingering questions and either prove or disprove the idea that ‘Dr. Lear is Kali.’ This will conclude the current storyline, which revisits and expands upon the story of Khan as originally presented in Star Trek: The Original Series.
