❗ Caution! This information reveals spoilers from the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode titled “Through The Lens Of Time.” You can watch it exclusively on Paramount+, but beware, tread carefully if you prefer to avoid spoilers!
In a hypothetical Mount Rushmore of exceptional space franchises, Star Trek undoubtedly holds a prominent place. While it’s not typically renowned for high levels of violence seen in some top sci-fi films, every now and then, it manages to shock its audience. Recently, the series Strange New Worlds delivered one such surprise with a body horror scene that could be the most terrifying (and disgusting) since the era of The Next Generation.
In future ‘Star Trek’ series, I’d love to see more of the thought-provoking narrative titled ‘Through The Lens Of Time’. However, I was taken aback by the graphic nature of a specific scene in it. A heads up for those who haven’t watched it yet – this scene is particularly gruesome and may leave a lasting impression.
Gamble Losing His Eyes Was An Unexpected Gruesome Moment In Strange New Worlds
As a movie critic, I found myself captivated by Ensign Gamble’s blossoming career on the Starship Enterprise, particularly in his role as a medical officer. However, during his first away mission, he made an unfortunate choice that would prove to be his undoing – picking up a mysterious glowing orb. This seemingly innocuous action resulted in an unimaginable fate: his eyeballs were seared right out of their sockets. The aftermath was shocking and unforgettable; as the audience, we were left stunned, unable to look away from the haunting emptiness that once housed Gamble’s eyes.
Unfortunately, Gamble was technically dead but being maintained alive by an enigmatic interdimensional entity known as the Vezda. This entity seemed to possess telepathic abilities or a means of communicating with the deceased, though the specifics were unclear. The Starfleet crew, however, decided to keep their distance from the Vezda and took measures to prevent this species from leaving its dimension and entering the galaxy. Despite these precautions, I have a feeling that we might encounter them again before the series concludes.
This Was The Wildest Body Horror Moment Since The Next Generation Episode “Conspiracy”
I found it surprising that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds depicted graphic scenes involving humans, but it’s not entirely unprecedented. Longtime viewers who followed The Next Generation may recall the unsettling episode “Conspiracy,” which was quite a shock for the usually family-friendly sci-fi genre.

In simpler terms, when Robert Picardo went back for Starfleet Academy (in Star Trek), he mentioned the significant difference he had to adapt to.
In the TV series “Conspiracy,” the team uncovers that some top-tier Starfleet officers are host to a parasite aiming to expand its influence within their ranks. This revelation culminates in a dramatic confrontation where Riker and Picard apprehend Lt. Commander Dexter Remmick, who is under the control of the dominant parasite. With few alternatives remaining, they are forced to use their phasers, resulting in Remmick’s head disintegrating. If you haven’t watched it in a while, give it another look!
This isn’t any milder than what you’d expect in top-notch horror flicks, and it’s true that the special effects no longer look as fresh. Yet, given how uncommon such intense violence is in a Star Trek series, I can’t help but draw comparisons between this and the recent episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” Will we witness more graphic scenes in the future? Time will tell!
