‘Star Trek’ Fans Get Bad News Regarding the Return of Chris Pine & Kelvin Timeline

Fans of Star Trek received disappointing news about the potential return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldaña, and the rest of the crew from the recent films. It’s been nine years since Star Trek Beyond came out – the longest wait between Star Trek movies ever. Paramount Pictures has faced difficulties getting Star Trek 4 made. The plan was to bring back the cast from the 2009 Star Trek and its sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond.

Unfortunately, there’s more discouraging news about Star Trek 4. According to a recent Variety report on David Ellison’s first 100 days leading Paramount, the studio has decided against continuing with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and the rest of the cast from the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies. Despite this, Paramount remains committed to the Star Trek franchise and is planning a new film, though it will feature a different cast.

The Long, Difficult Road for ‘Star Trek 4’ Has Sadly Come to an End

The fourth Star Trek movie has faced many challenges during its development. Originally announced before Star Trek Beyond came out, it would have featured Chris Hemsworth returning as George Kirk, James T. Kirk’s father. However, after Star Trek Beyond didn’t perform well at the box office, the project was canceled and reworked to lower costs. Several directors, including Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley, were considered and proposed different ideas for a new Star Trek film, some of which involved the crew from the 2009 movie and its sequels. Ultimately, Paramount Pictures decided audiences preferred a film that continued the story with that original crew.

In July 2021, Paramount Pictures chose Matt Shakman, the director of WandaVision, to direct Star Trek 4, initially aiming for a December 2023 release. The following February, Paramount announced that Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldaña, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, and John Cho would reprise their roles. However, the actors and their representatives were surprised by this announcement, as they hadn’t yet discussed contracts or pay. By August 2022, Shakman left the project to direct The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Since then, there have been no further updates on Star Trek 4, although many of the original cast members have expressed interest in returning.

Paramount Pictures was working on a new Star Trek movie, an origin story set in the Kelvin Timeline. It was going to be directed by Toby Haynes, who directed Andor, and produced by Simon Kinberg. It’s unclear if this is the movie Paramount is now moving forward with, or if they’ve started fresh again. Unfortunately, it seems likely that the story of the Kelvin Timeline crew won’t get a proper conclusion, unlike the original Star Trek and Next Generation series, which both had final farewells.
