The world of Magic: The Gathering is about to get a lot bigger! In November 2026, a new set called Universes Beyond will introduce elements from other franchises, and this time it’s Star Trek. While spaceships and futuristic weapons might seem unusual in a fantasy game, Magic has previously included sci-fi themes, allowing those concepts to fit right in.
Like other Magic: The Gathering crossover sets, the Star Trek Universes Beyond set will likely include powerful Legendary Creatures that players can use as their Commanders. Leaks have already revealed Captain Kirk as one of these, and more are expected to be announced soon.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard Needs To Engage The Enemy
While Captain Kirk would be an obvious choice for a Magic: The Gathering Commander, it’s time to focus on the next captain of the Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard. Star Trek: The Next Generation is a fan favorite for a reason – many consider it the best series, especially after the initial season.
Patrick Stewart’s portrayal of Captain Picard demonstrated that Star Trek offers much more than just the iconic duo of Kirk and Spock, and he deserves a powerful Commander card in Magic: The Gathering. Even if players simply enjoy dramatically saying “Engage” when he enters the battlefield, a Picard card is essential.
Sela Can Be Magic: The Gathering’s Romulan Leader
The Romulans are a prominent group in Star Trek, but it’s surprisingly hard to name one truly iconic leader. Shinzon, from Star Trek: Nemesis, could have fit the bill if the movie had been better received. Another possibility is the unnamed Romulan Commander from the classic episode “Balance of Terror,” but it would be helpful if he had an official name in the show’s history.
Sela is an excellent choice for a Romulan Commander. She’s well-suited to lead the Romulan faction and can effectively use the Sneak ability, mirroring the Romulans’ reliance on cloaking technology. Unlike the aggressive Klingons, the Romulans favor a more calculated approach – they prioritize careful planning, strategic thinking, and eliminating key opponents at the right moment.
Captain Benjamin Sisko Can Bring Some Non-Enterprise Ships To The Federation’s Side
With the release of the Edge of Eternities set, Magic: The Gathering now includes spaceship gameplay, meaning players can expect to command various Enterprises. However, the Federation boasts even more recognizable ships to use in battle, and no one pilots them better than…
Captain Sisko didn’t command a starship like the Enterprise, but he led both the Defiant and Deep Space Nine. If the ‘Partner’ feature returns in future Star Trek games, Sisko should be a unique, non-creature Commander who starts with control of Deep Space Nine, and can then strengthen both it and his own abilities throughout the game.
Gowron Needs To Stare Down All Enemies Of The Klingon Empire
So far, only a handful of cards have been shown from the upcoming Star Trek and Magic: The Gathering collaboration, and only two characters have been revealed as cards: Captain Kirk and Gowron. Because Gowron was a former leader of the Klingons, he’s likely to be the main commander featured in a Klingon-themed Commander deck, if the sets are organized by factions.
He’s known for impressive fight choreography in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. But in a card game, he’d probably have a special ability to summon many Klingon Warrior cards – creatures eager to sacrifice themselves for glory.
Captain Janeway Can Destroy All Enemy Creatures Like They Were Tuvix
Although many Neelix fans will likely be excited about him leading a deck focused on food tokens, another character from Star Trek: Voyager is a more fitting choice to be a Commander. As the fourth major Captain – following Kirk, Picard, and Sisko – she’s a logical selection.
It would be really funny if there was a way to win a game as Janeway based on how many land cards players use. Even though some modern fans might not be huge Voyager fans, Captain Janeway herself is a fantastic character and deserves attention as one of the best in the whole series.
The Borg Queen Can Become The Next Elesh Norn
One challenge with creating stories about the Borg is that, because they function as a single mind, it’s difficult to feature a specific leader. Fortunately, the movie Star Trek: First Contact introduced the Borg Queen, who acts as a ruler for the entire Borg Collective.
While the Borg Queen might seem perfect for simply creating lots of Drone tokens, that feels too simple for such a major Star Trek villain. It’s more probable that the Borg Queen – and other Borg cards – will focus on taking control of opponents’ creatures and adding them to the Borg collective.
Although a very strong ability, it makes perfect sense for the Borg to have assimilation as a mechanic in Magic: The Gathering. To balance its power, the Borg Queen card would likely require a significant amount of mana to play.
Khan Noonien Singh Can Conquer Kirk On Countless Battlefields
With Captain Kirk potentially joining Magic: The Gathering, it’s a good bet his iconic enemy, Khan, will follow. And it’s more likely we’ll see Ricardo Montalban’s portrayal of Khan in the game, rather than the more recent, and less popular, version played by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Given that Khan is a genetically enhanced individual, he’d translate well into Magic: The Gathering as a powerful creature that doesn’t cost much to play. However, simply giving him abilities like First Strike, Haste, and Trample wouldn’t do him justice. The character is known for his intelligence and leadership, so a Magic card representing him should reflect those qualities, not just his physical strength. He was far more than just a brute who fought with Kirk.
Q Will Bring Divine Mischief To Magic: The Gathering
The world of Magic: The Gathering features powerful, god-like beings that players can include in their card collections, making an appearance by ‘Q’ entirely plausible. Although he might have been a better fit as a Planeswalker character, the creators, Wizards of the Coast, reserve that type of character for figures originating from Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.
It’s hard to predict how Q will function in Magic: The Gathering because he’s incredibly powerful and unpredictable, able to fill any role. There’s a good chance the D20 dice from the Dungeons & Dragons set will reappear, possibly with Q using a roll chart that could have unexpected, negative consequences for the player. That risk simply comes with attempting to control such immense power.
Gul Dukat Can Lead The Cardassians Into A New Era Of Conquest
The original Star Trek series featured villains who were frightening because they were clever, cruel, and surprisingly charismatic. These qualities allowed them to rise to power, leading armies and empires, and few were more menacing than Gul Dukat, the primary antagonist of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
The Dominion would fit well as a faction in Magic: The Gathering, and several characters could be its main villain. However, Gul Dukat from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the most fitting choice for a Commander card, given how central his conflict with Sisko and his complex connection with Kira Nerys were to the show’s story.
Ideally, any Commander version of Gul Dukat would reflect his character as seen in the first six seasons of Deep Space Nine. Most fans would prefer to avoid the later portrayal of him as a supernatural villain connected to the Pah-Wraiths.
Spock Is The Most Logical Choice For A Magic: The Gathering Commander
It’s not a matter of if Spock will get a Magic: The Gathering Commander card, but how many he’ll have. A card featuring Leonard Nimoy’s Spock is almost certain, as he’s the most well-known and beloved character from Star Trek.
There are so many different versions of Spock—from the original series, the movies, and the recent reboot—that any one of them could show up in Magic: The Gathering. In fact, it’s likely we’ll see multiple versions of the character.
