One of Spider-Man’s strangest movie franchises is apparently getting a reboot.
In 2018, Sony launched its own shared universe of Marvel characters with the release of Venom, directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Tom Hardy. Though it has connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe starring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, this universe focuses on characters other than Spider-Man, pulling from the wider world of Spider-Man comics.
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe also features several other movies, including ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ (2021), ‘Morbius’ (2022), and upcoming films like ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Venom: The Last Dance,’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ all scheduled for release in 2024.
After the disappointing release of Kraven the Hunter, it looked like Sony was abandoning its plans for a shared cinematic universe based on Marvel characters. But according to CEO Tom Rothman, a fresh start with a new approach is still possible down the line.
What do we know about the Spider-Man reboot?
During a recent appearance on Matt Belloni’s podcast, ‘The Town,’ Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman denied reports that the Spider-Verse franchise—including both animated films and any potential live-action Spider-Man movies—was cancelled.
He later confirmed Sony intends to revisit those projects in the future. When asked if this would involve starting over with a new cast and crew, Rothman confirmed that it would.
Beyond this initial announcement, there aren’t any specifics about the future of the franchise, so it’s unknown what it will look like or when it will be released. It’s possible this simply means Sony will create individual movies based on Spider-Man characters from Marvel. However, if it is a complete reboot and a new cinematic universe, the cliffhanger at the end of Venom: The Last Dance – featuring Andy Serkis as Knull – will likely never be concluded.
However, this news isn’t entirely unexpected. Sony needs to consistently produce Spider-Man movies to maintain the rights to the character. Since many of their previous Spider-Man related films haven’t performed well financially or with critics, a fresh start could be a smart move for the studio.
