A recent trailer for the upcoming live-action Spider-Man series, Spider-Noir, suggests the show might draw inspiration from the popular 1990s animated series. While most Marvel movies and TV shows are based on the comic books, sometimes a cartoon provides the initial idea for a character or storyline.
It appears Prime Video’s new Spider-Man series will offer a gritty, film noir-style take on the superhero. The show will feature a live-action version of Spider-Man, originally voiced by Nicolas Cage in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and explore darker interpretations of familiar characters from Peter Parker’s world within the Marvel Universe.
I’m getting the feeling this new project will really draw inspiration from the world Spider-Man Noir comes from, that gritty, old-timey universe. But it won’t stop there! I think we’ll see influences from all over the place in the Marvel universe – the original comics, for sure, and even the 90s Spider-Man cartoon, Spider-Man: The Animated Series. That quick glimpse of a really monstrous creature in the Spider-Noir trailer definitely hinted at that cartoon’s style!
Is Spider-Noir About To Introduce A Live-Action Man-Spider?
The trailer for Spider-Noir features a brief glimpse of a man with a severely disfigured face and spider-like limbs. While the trailer doesn’t name him, his appearance suggests he might be the show’s version of Man-Spider.
In the 1990s Spider-Man cartoon, Spider-Man temporarily transformed into a creature called Man-Spider. The show revealed that Dr. Curt Connors, also known as The Lizard, discovered that gaining spider-like abilities was only part of a larger change triggered by the radioactive spider bite.
Over several episodes, the story built to a dramatic turning point: Peter Parker became the Man-Spider, a tremendously powerful but savage creature. Acting more like a monster than a hero, Spider-Man struggled to control himself and needed assistance from his friends to regain his humanity.
The Man-Spider storyline is remembered as a highlight of the 1960s Spider-Man animated series, offering a unique take on Spider-Man’s origins. Inspired by comics from the early 1970s, the story centers around Spider-Man’s attempt to lose his powers, which unexpectedly results in him gaining four extra arms.
The Man-Spider transformation was a truly frightening version of that storyline, and it let the show explore just how far they could take the concept of someone being changed by a radioactive spider.
Given the show’s dark subject matter, it’s logical that the Spider-Noir storyline would also be intense, though it’s unclear exactly how that will play out. It’s possible Nicolas Cage’s character, Ben Reilly, will try to prevent himself from becoming the Man-Spider.
