The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has revealed that Peter Parker will face a very personal struggle: changes to his own DNA. It seems this storyline will connect with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who is now working as a professor at Empire State University.
The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows Peter Parker gaining the ability to create webs organically, similar to how Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man did. This seems to be causing Peter some concern, along with other strange occurrences like waking up naked in a web. He decides to seek help from Dr. Banner, who points to possible DNA mutations as the cause, as hinted at in the trailer.
Peter’s current situation, and how he’s responding to it, is a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s something Spider-Man has faced many times in the comics. Because of this, there’s already a history of similar storylines, and several examples of how it could unfold in a movie.
Spider-Man’s History With DNA Mutations Explained
In the 1971 comic The Amazing Spider-Man #100, Spider-Man (Peter Parker) was facing a lot of personal problems, including his friend Harry Osborn’s drug use and the recent loss of Captain George Stacy. Overwhelmed and wanting to be rid of his powers, Peter tried to create a serum to remove them. Instead, it unexpectedly changed his DNA, giving him four extra arms.
Spider-Man is well-versed in biology, but he realized he needed help with this particular problem, so he turned to Dr. Curt Connors, the man behind the Lizard. They began working on a solution, but their efforts were suddenly interrupted by Morbius, a living vampire. This led to a fight involving all three of them: Spider-Man, Morbius, and the Lizard.
Everything led to Peter and Dr. Connors successfully using Morbius’s DNA to reverse Spider-Man’s mutation, returning him to normal. This storyline, known as the Six Arms Saga, later became the foundation for a multi-part story arc in the 1990s animated series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, which also introduced some new twists to the plot.
In the cartoon, Peter didn’t create the serum out of annoyance with his powers. Instead, Dr. Connors told him his DNA was slowly changing, so Spider-Man proactively worked with Dr. Mariah Crawford to find a cure.
Similar to the Spider-Man seen in comics, this version gained four extra arms. But the story didn’t end there – Spider-Man then transformed again, becoming the well-known Man-Spider.
Unexpectedly, Kraven the Hunter and the Punisher joined forces. They teamed up to bring Spider-Man to Dr. Crawford, who was able to fix the changes to Peter Parker’s DNA.
Marvel revisited the idea of Spider-Man facing a life-threatening condition in the 2005-2006 storyline “Other: Evolve or Die.” This story arc featured Spider-Man fighting Morlun while also grappling with a seemingly fatal illness connected to his abilities.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day May Be Combining The Six-Arms Saga With The Man-Spider Arc
The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day suggests the Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing its own version of the Six Arms Saga. However, it seems to be drawing inspiration from both the original comic book storyline and the television adaptation. It’s currently unclear from the trailer whether Peter Parker’s genetic mutation is happening randomly or if he caused it himself.
It’s possible Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is dealing with a lot of emotional trauma after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. This is similar to how Peter Parker felt when he desperately tried to find a cure in The Amazing Spider-Man #100. If that’s the case, Peter deciding to handle things himself could be a secret the movie trailer isn’t revealing.
Although Bruce Banner wasn’t involved in the previous Six Arms Saga storylines, his appearance in this new story creates a similar feel. The advice he gives Peter in the trailer sounds a lot like the warning Dr. Curt Connors gave Spider-Man in the 1990s animated series, hinting that Banner might fulfill a similar role to Connors in this version of the story.
What Spider-Man’s Mutating DNA Could Lead Into Spider-Man: Brand New Day
It’s still unclear how Marvel will handle the changes Peter Parker is going through in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While the story could potentially follow the “Other: Evolve or Die” storyline, the trailer actually suggests a Man-Spider transformation is more likely.
Bruce Banner mentioning his changing DNA and Peter describing waking up in a web suggest he’s starting to take on spider-like traits. This could lead to him developing the six-armed form first seen in The Amazing Spider-Man #100, potentially culminating in a large-scale action scene similar to Peter’s transformation into the Man-Spider as depicted in the animated series.
With the possibility of Man-Spider appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the return of Jon Bernthal as the Punisher makes sense. To stay true to the original story, it would be a good idea to include characters who were part of it.
The Punisher previously assisted in capturing Peter Parker when he briefly transformed into the Man-Spider, so including him in the movie would be a nice nod to that event if the filmmakers choose to go in that direction. This could even lead to an interesting partnership between the Punisher and Bruce Banner, who might be crucial in helping to rescue Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
