Launched in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become one of the most successful movie franchises ever. Though known for its superhero stories, the films cover a wide range of genres, including science fiction, action, and even heist movies.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its humor, but it hasn’t really explored the romantic comedy genre—at least, not obviously. However, one MCU film secretly is a rom-com, and a surprisingly good one, reminiscent of classic 80s films like those by John Hughes.
Spider-Man: Far From Home Has Great Rom-Com Aspects
I absolutely loved Spider-Man: Far From Home, and honestly, I think it’s a surprisingly fantastic romantic comedy! It takes its time getting to the action with Mysterio, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Before all that, we get this really charming teen rom-com vibe, like something straight out of the best era for that kind of movie. It felt so genuine and fun!
Peter Parker just wants to be a regular teenager and enjoy his school trip to Europe, but it’s hard when he’s also a superhero! He’s hoping to finally ask out his crush, MJ, and the movie follows his funny attempts to get some alone time with her. Their playful conversations are reminiscent of classic romantic comedies.
Tom Holland and Zendaya, who play Peter and MJ, have fantastic chemistry, and it really shines on screen. They’re so charming together that it’s easy to get lost in their scenes, and you almost don’t notice when the action starts because you’re so invested in them.
The MCU Should Branch Out And Try A Full On Rom-Com
Look, the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t just about superheroes punching things anymore, and that’s a good thing. We’ve seen them experiment with different styles lately. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness really leaned into horror, Ant-Man felt like a fun heist flick, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a fantastic showcase for martial arts action. It’s refreshing to see them branch out.
Although Spider-Man: Far From Home has some romantic comedy aspects, it quickly shifts focus to action. It would be great to see Marvel create a full-length romantic comedy movie, even with action and superhero moments, but with the romance as the central theme.
While it’s hard to say which characters would lead a more lighthearted story, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a huge roster – and is always introducing new ones – so experimenting with a fun concept is a good idea. Now is a good time for the MCU to try something different, like a romantic comedy.
If Marvel ever wants to make a true romantic comedy, they should take notes from Spider-Man: Far From Home, which successfully balances romance and comedy.
