Following a massive blockbuster like the recent Spider-Man movie is a tough act, and I doubt the new comic series, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will surpass the box office records set by Tom Holland’s films. Marvel Studios has found huge success with Spider-Man, as two of the MCU movies starring Peter Parker have each earned over $1 billion worldwide.
Marvel’s future movies – including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday, and Avengers: Secret Wars – all have the potential to be huge hits. While the next Spider-Man film boasts a great cast, Tom Holland probably won’t surpass the records held by previous Spider-Man actors. But considering everything Spider-Man has been through, that’s perfectly acceptable.
Spider-Man: No Way Home Set Up Two Major Box Office Records That Brand New Day Is Unlikely To Beat
Spider-Man: No Way Home is a massive blockbuster, ranking among the most successful films ever made, not just within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it could have surpassed $2 billion worldwide if released in China, its current $1.9 billion total is incredible. This level of success for a solo superhero film is something Marvel previously only achieved with its Avengers movies.
The multiverse was key to making it happen. Spider-Man: No Way Home was a huge moment for fans, bringing back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man after years away from the role. The film also featured familiar villains from their previous movies, along with appearances by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Daredevil (Charlie Cox).
Even though Spider-Man: Brand New Day includes appearances by Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, it isn’t generating the same level of excitement as the team-up of the three live-action Spider-Men. Because of this, it will be extremely difficult for the movie to beat No Way Home’s impressive box office numbers – a global total of $1.9 billion and a domestic opening weekend of $260.1 million, which was the second-highest ever.
Why Spider-Man: Brand New Day Not Breaking No Way Home’s Records Is Alright
So far, each Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has earned more money at the box office than the one before it. However, it’s perfectly fine if the next movie doesn’t continue that trend. Tom Holland has shared that Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man film will be a more grounded, street-level story, offering a fresh beginning for Peter Parker within the franchise.
This movie is intentionally focusing on a more intimate story, but it has the potential to launch a new Spider-Man trilogy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If successful, it could lead to another blockbuster event similar to No Way Home. Given Tom Holland’s previous success as Spider-Man in the MCU, and with the inclusion of characters like the Hulk and the Punisher, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to earn over $1 billion at the box office.
