A recent report suggests the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day will follow a familiar pattern seen in other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. While the film is expected to feature seven villains, including the return of Michael Mando as Mac Gargan (Scorpion, previously seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming), the main villain hasn’t been revealed yet. Scorpion was last shown in prison at the end of Homecoming, setting the stage for his return in the new blockbuster.
A recent post by scooper Daniel Richtman suggests that the upcoming Spider-Man movie will feature a team-up between Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. They’ll be fighting agents from Damage Control who are under mind control and attempting to free Michael Mando’s Scorpion from the prison he’s been held in since Spider-Man: Homecoming.
It’s disappointing to see that plot point appear again, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has relied too much on the idea of villains being controlled by mind control. This trope often makes characters feel like they have no real choices, and it rarely leads to any significant or permanent impact when they break free – no one really suffers any lasting consequences.

We’ve seen this idea explored in several Marvel movies, like when Bucky Barnes was secretly controlled by HYDRA in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when Scarlet Witch manipulated the heroes in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and when Loki used his sceptre in The Avengers.
Even within the Spider-Man series, particularly in No Way Home, it’s possible to argue that Willem Dafoe’s character, Norman Osborn, was really being controlled by the Goblin serum.

Just like other villains, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock was largely driven by his own mechanical arms in Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s important to remember that Otto Octavius was originally a brilliant scientist who didn’t intend to be a villain.

On-set photos revealed Spider-Man battling Damage Control, including a chase after their tank. Footage of this tank was captured last year while filming the movie in Glasgow and Basingstoke, essentially spoiling the action sequence.
In the upcoming series Brand New Day, Damage Control will be a significant presence. Severance actor Tramell Tillman has been cast as the head of the agency, and many see him as Marvel’s equivalent to Rick Flag Sr. from the DC Universe.
The Punisher will be back in action with a souped-up battle van in Spider-Man 4. This van is an upgraded version of the one he used in the Daredevil series and his own Netflix show.
The action could continue even inside the prison, as sources say Spider-Man will battle a group of ninjas there. Recent reports suggest this group might be the Hand, the same organization featured in the Netflix series Daredevil.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Mind-Control May Have an X-Men Connection
According to Daniel Richtman, Sadie Sink—known for her role in Stranger Things—will play a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the ability to control minds (as reported by Cosmic Marvel). It appears this character will be responsible for freeing the Scorpion from prison, unless the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day introduces other characters with similar powers.
It’s still unknown what character Maya Sink will portray in Brand New Day, but Marvel Studios seems to be positioning her as a key figure for future films. Reports suggest she’ll return in Avengers: Secret Wars next year, and many believe she’s playing Jean Grey, potentially leading into the X-Men reboot planned for Phase 7.
There’s some truth to this idea, since the upcoming Brand New Day storyline will feature a villain who hunts mutants targeting Sink’s character. However, it’s puzzling why Grey, normally a hero, would be freeing Scorpion – or anyone else – from prison.
I can totally picture the tension between Spider-Man and the Punisher during this prison fight! It’s fascinating to think about – Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is ready to take down these brainwashed enemies permanently, while Peter Parker, as always, is desperately trying to save them and break the control they’re under. It’s a classic hero-versus-vigilante clash!
