Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, originally planned for the comic storyline “Brand New Day” to introduce a significant superhero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This character had been hinted at for nine years prior.
The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows a lot of familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both heroes and villains. Tom Holland is back as Spider-Man, alongside Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. Plus, Michael Mando is returning as the villain Scorpion, a character he hasn’t played since the movie Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The film will feature several new villains, including Boomerang and Tarantula, who appeared briefly in the trailer. Fans of Daredevil will also see The Hand return, and Marvin Jones III will play the villain Tombstone.
No Spider-Man movie is complete without Peter Parker’s friends, and Zendaya and Jacob Batalon return as MJ and Ned. There’s also been talk of Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, according to reports, another important character from Spider-Man’s history almost appeared in the next movie.
Which popular Spider-Man character did Kevin Feige unsuccessfully push to see included in Brand New Day?
A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) by The Geeky Cast claims that Marvel’s Kevin Feige really wanted Miles Morales to be included in the upcoming film, but Sony refused. This isn’t shocking to many fans, as Feige previously told Variety that Marvel was asked to avoid using the character until after the Spider-Verse animated movies finish their story.
Miles Morales, created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, debuted in 2011’s Ultimate Fallout #4 after the death of Peter Parker in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. He then became the new Spider-Man in that universe, starring in his own two comic book series. Later, after the Ultimate Universe concluded, Miles Morales was integrated into Marvel’s main universe.
Miles Morales is usually shown as a teenager. In the Spider-Verse movies from Sony, he’s around 14 or 15 years old, and the Spider-Man games from Insomniac depict him as 17. It’s currently unknown how old Marvel Studios will portray Miles in their movies, but he’s technically been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, when his uncle, Aaron Davis, briefly mentioned him.
Since ‘Brand New Day’ is planned for 2028, Miles Morales would be at least eleven years old, considering the events of ‘Homecoming’ happened in 2016-2017. Because Aaron Davis never specified Miles’ age, Marvel and Sony have flexibility in determining how old Miles will be when he eventually joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The new Spider-Man movie, titled Brand New Day, is expected to be released in theaters on July 31, 2026, as part of the sixth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
