The new gladiator series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, has received a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This series continues the story of Spartacus, but with a twist: it imagines an alternate timeline where Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay) lives and pursues revenge.
The new show House of Ashur has earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on the first six reviews. This score is likely to change as more reviews come in, especially around its two-episode premiere on December 5th. Currently, there isn’t a viewer score available yet.
Jeff Ewing at Collider praises Spartacus: House of Ashur, saying it remarkably reimagines history by using the myths and beliefs of ancient Rome to give a character a second chance.
Kaiya Shunyata at RogerEbert.com commends House of Ashur as a spin-off that both pays tribute to the original and, in some ways, even surpasses it.
If the show maintains its perfect 100% rating, it would be a big step up from Spartacus, which had ratings between 52% and 73% across its four seasons. As one reviewer noted, this would make House of Ashur one of the few spinoffs that can truly compete with the original series.
Steven S. DeKnight, who created the show Spartacus, returned as showrunner and executive producer for its spinoff, House of Ashur. A review in Variety by Aramide Tinubu praised the new series, stating that DeKnight still creates a captivating world.
I was so excited to hear from DeKnight at San Diego Comic-Con 2025! He told ScreenRant that they’ve actually planned out five whole seasons for the Spartacus sequel! And get this – he hinted he’s got even more ideas for spinoffs set in that same world. Here’s what he had to say:
Before committing to a show, I like to be confident it has a good chance of lasting. So, we sketched out plans for around five seasons, though that could range from four to seven depending on its popularity. Plus, if this show does well – and I’m sure it will – I have four or five potential spinoffs already in development. There’s a lot of potential for expansion, like with ‘House of Hilara,’ for example.
The future of House of Ashur, including potential new seasons and spin-offs, hinges on how many people watch. However, the show’s perfect score from critics suggests it will be a success for Starz and that viewers will enjoy seeing more of the story.
Lucy Lawless returns as Lucretia from the original Spartacus series, appearing in the first episode to alter Ashur’s destiny. Despite a challenging schedule, Lawless was able to film the scenes, which nicely resolved the established relationship between Ashur and her character.
The cast also features Tenika Davis as Achillia, a female gladiator, Graham McTavish as Korris, the gladiator trainer, Jordi Webber as the driven Tarchon, Jackson Gallagher as Julius Caesar, and Jaime Slater as Cornelia, Caesar’s wife.
Joining the cast of Spartacus: House of Ashur are Jamaica Vaughan as Hilara, Ivana Baquero as Messia, Claudia Black as Cossutia, India Shaw-Smith as Viridia, and Leigh Gill as Satyrus.
