South Park Creators’ Action Comedy That Landed An NC-17 Rating 9 Times Is Getting A New Streaming Home

Everyone knows Trey Parker and Matt Stone as the creators of South Park, but they’ve also made a few movies. I just heard that one of those films is going to be available on a streaming service soon, which is really exciting!

Directed by Parker and co-written with Pam Brady, Team America: World Police is a funny action-comedy about a group of independent heroes who try to stop terrorism around the world. But their methods cause a lot of unintended damage, and they risk being disbanded.

Over 21 years after its release, the movie Team America: World Police is coming to a new streaming service. Like South Park, the R-rated comedy often sparked strong reactions from viewers. It will be available on Paramount+ starting February 1, shortly after leaving Hoopla on January 29.

When Team America: World Police came out, it quickly became a popular topic of conversation. Created mainly by Parker and Stone, with voice acting from Kristen Miller, Masasa Moyo, and Daran Norris, the film was notoriously difficult to make. The unique puppet style and the movie’s tone caused a lot of delays and put considerable stress on the director and crew.

Okay, so Team America: World Police had a major battle with the MPAA. They actually gave it an NC-17 rating nine times! It all came down to this puppet sex scene – the filmmakers knew it would be pushing things, but they had to seriously trim it. Originally, it was a minute and a half long, but they ended up cutting it down to just 50 seconds, mostly removing some, uh, really graphic stuff involving bodily fluids. It was a whole ordeal!

Because Team America: World Police satirized both Hollywood and North Korean politics, it unsurprisingly got a mixed response from the people it made fun of. Alec Baldwin actually liked the joke about him, George Clooney—who previously voiced characters on South Park—felt honored to be included, and Matt Damon, though a little puzzled by his depiction, still had respect for the filmmakers, Parker and Stone.

Kim Jong Il, the North Korean leader famously satirized as the main antagonist in Team America: World Police, never publicly commented on the film. However, actor Sean Penn was very upset with his portrayal and even sent a strongly worded, offensive letter to the filmmakers, Parker and Stone, to express his disapproval.

Beyond the film’s controversial reputation, Team America: World Police is special for Trey Parker and Matt Stone because it was the last full-length movie they both wrote and directed together. Before that, they’d made the cult favorite Orgazmo and the South Park movie in 1997 and 1999 respectively, both of which initially received NC-17 ratings. They also starred in the comedy BASEketball. Despite Team America‘s success, the demanding production process was so exhausting that Parker and Stone have since focused primarily on South Park.

As a big fan of both Team America: World Police and South Park, I was thrilled to hear Team America is now streaming on Paramount+. It just makes sense, since Paramount+ is already the home of everything South Park. Parker and Stone have so much South Park content still coming, and with how often South Park goes viral for its takes on current events – especially with its jokes about Donald Trump – I’m really curious to see if this move boosts streaming numbers for both shows starting next month.
