Sophie Turner stars in a new crime series about an ordinary woman unexpectedly caught up in a risky heist. While the premise is exciting, the show hasn’t been receiving great reviews. It premiered on Prime Video on January 21st and currently has a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a generally average reception from critics.
One of the earliest reviews of the show, penned by David Opie of Digital Spy, was quite critical. He pointed out that the most compelling parts of Steal felt more like a difficult family story than a thrilling crime caper, and ultimately predicted the show wouldn’t be worth viewers’ time.
Film and TV critic Pramit Chatterjee said the show is enjoyable mainly because of its cast, but cautioned viewers not to anticipate deep insights into issues like wealth disparity or online activism.
Richard Roeper from rogerebert.com acknowledged the series relied heavily on familiar tropes, but he was very impressed with Hera Turner’s performance. He described her character, Zara, as both complex and relatable. However, he believes the show would need a more compelling storyline to justify a second season.
The series ‘Steal’ is technically well-done, with good editing, acting, and direction. However, the plot sometimes gets weighed down by lengthy explanations of financial schemes and betrayals that feel random. A lot of time is spent discussing technical details – things like ‘cold wallets,’ which are essentially the modern equivalent of floppy disks in a spy story – and it’s not very glamorous.
