Sony Pictures announced in June 2025 that it’s making a sequel to the 2009 film The Social Network, which told the story of Facebook’s beginnings. The new movie, titled The Social Reckoning, will focus on the fallout from the 2021 Facebook leak – the one revealed by Frances Haugen and detailed in the podcast The Facebook Files. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the original film, is returning to write and direct, but with a completely new cast. It’s intended to be a companion piece to the first movie, exploring more recent events.
Jeremy Strong is replacing Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg in the upcoming film. The cast also includes Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen, and Betty Gilpin. The story focuses on Frances Haugen (played by Madison) who, with the help of Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Allen White), reveals Facebook’s internal secrets, leading to public scrutiny. Sony recently shared a sneak peek of the film at an industry event, though no footage has been released to the public yet.

At a private showing during CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, Sony Pictures unveiled the first trailer for their upcoming film, The Social Reckoning. The footage featured Madison’s Frances Haugen and Allen White’s Jeff Horowitz brainstorming a story that could reveal confidential information about Facebook. The trailer then cut to Jeremy Strong portraying Mark Zuckerberg, who was shown defending his position within the company and asserting his role as a champion of free speech.
I’ve been following the buzz around the new Zuckerberg movie, and the initial reactions to Jesse Plemons’ performance are all over the place! Some people at the preview thought he was doing more of a Saturday Night Live impression, hoping to see a more nuanced take on the character. But others were really impressed, saying he absolutely nails Zuckerberg’s voice and looks eerily like him – one industry insider even predicted it could be a viral moment! There were a few comparisons to his Succession character, Kendall Roy, with people saying it felt a little too similar, but overall it’s definitely got people talking.

I’m really excited about this movie! From what I’ve heard, the story is going to be super gripping and take us back to a big event that happened in 2021. It’s interesting to think about how fresh that event still is in everyone’s minds when the movie comes out, and I’m curious to see how they’ll handle it, especially since the original Social Network was so dramatic. We’re only about six months away from the release, so I’m hoping a trailer drops soon! I’d love to get a better look at the whole cast, not just Madison, White, and Strong, and get a clearer idea of what the movie’s actually about.
The Social Reckoning is set to debut in theaters on Oct. 9, 2026.
