Sony has canceled a fantasy adventure movie that was previously in the works. The film’s writer, Matt Braly, recently shared details about why the project was dropped, revealing what happened during its development.

Matt Braly says his Thai inspired animated movie was canceled

Matt Braly, the creator of Amphibia, shared that an animated movie he’d been working on for over two years, inspired by Thai culture, has been cancelled. The studio determined it wasn’t likely to be profitable.

The writer recently shared on Instagram that he learned about a decision regarding his work at the start of 2025. He expressed pride in the screenplay he created with Rebecca Sugar and commended the team who helped develop the film initially. While he was disappointed, he emphasized that he understood and respected the studio’s choice. He wrote, “I know these decisions aren’t easy, and I have a lot of respect for the studio and the great work they do.”

The project centered on a teenage boy’s journey into the world of Thai spirits, seeking inner healing before a major operation. According to Braly, the story wasn’t primarily about finding a cure, but about learning to accept challenging circumstances.

Braly said the project was deeply meaningful to him, explaining that he was diagnosed with a lifelong illness at a young age, which significantly changed his life. He also shared some of the artwork online, giving fans a preview of what to expect.

At first, Braly didn’t say which company was working on the project. But Variety later reported that Sony Pictures Animation had canceled the film. Sony had originally announced the fantasy adventure, developed by Braly, three years prior in a Deadline article.
