The next Sonic the Hedgehog movie is expected to feature a well-known villain, and bringing him back fits the story well. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 showed Dr. Ivo Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey) teaming up with his grandfather, Gerald, to destroy Earth as an act of revenge. They managed to activate a powerful weapon, but Ivo unexpectedly changed sides and helped Sonic’s team stop the disaster. In doing so, he destroyed Gerald and appeared to sacrifice himself to save the planet.
Despite seemingly dying in Sonic 3, Jim Carrey is reportedly returning as Dr. Ivo Robotnik for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. According to entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, Carrey is currently filming his scenes. This suggests Dr. Robotnik will be the primary villain in Sonic 4, alongside the also-rumored Metal Sonic.

Jim Carrey’s possible return in Sonic 4 is generating buzz, following a January 2026 report that he was discussing a comeback with Paramount Pictures for the next film in the series.
I’ve been following the theories about how Dr. Robotnik could come back in Sonic 4, and one idea that makes a lot of sense to me is that there’s another Robotnik out there, living in Amy’s world. Some people think his sacrifice at the end of Sonic 3 didn’t actually kill him, but sent him to Amy’s timeline, and that he’s been secretly working behind the scenes, maybe even creating Metal Sonic. It’s a cool thought!
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will finally let players team up Sonic and Amy Rose in a risky adventure set in a dark, futuristic world, drawing inspiration from the story of the classic Sonic CD game.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to premiere in theaters on March 19, 2027.
Which Other Villains Could Show Up in Sonic 4?

Bringing Dr. Robotnik back in Sonic 4 was a bit complicated. His apparent sacrifice at the end of Sonic 3 had surprisingly turned him into a heroic figure, making it difficult to portray him as the villain again.
Given that Dr. Robotnik created Metal Sonic – a powerful enemy first hinted at after the credits of Sonic 3 – it’s no surprise he’ll also be a key part of Sonic 4.
In the world of Sonic the Hedgehog, Metal Sonic is a robotic copy of Sonic who can perfectly imitate his abilities. Metal Sonic’s main purpose is to prove he’s better than the original Sonic, no matter what it takes.
Besides Metal Sonic and Robotnik, other potential villains could include a different version of Agent Stone – Robotnik’s trusty helper – and a whole group of alternate Metal Sonics.
Some fans believe Eggman Nega, a future descendant of Dr. Eggman, might appear in Sonic 4. They theorize he created Metal Sonic and has been secretly controlling Dr. Robotnik to get revenge for the death of Gerald Robotnik.
