Solo Leveling Studio’s New Anime Movie Races to Top Chart Ranking

Most blockbuster movies these days are based on popular franchises, often originating from Japanese comics or novels. However, a recent film success stands out – it quietly became a hit shortly before a new giant robot movie came out.

The anime film The Keeper of the Camphor Tree recently finished third in Japanese theaters. While the studio behind it created a huge hit just two years ago, this movie is based on a different story. A well-known and consistently popular franchise took the top spot, proving its continued strength with audiences.

Gundam and A-1 Pictures’ New Anime Movie Dominate With Major Box Office Wins

The Japanese box office saw some changes this weekend with the release of several new films, including one based on a popular novel. The Keeper of the Camphor Tree, directed by Tomohiko Ito, is an anime adaptation of Kusunoki no Bannin. It was produced by A-1 Pictures, the studio known for many successful projects.

The new movie, released on January 30th, debuted at number three in the Japanese box office, proving its quality and the popularity of the original novel. It performed better than recent anime hits like the Chainsaw Man movie, but fell behind Disney’s Zootopia 2. A different anime film topped the charts this week. This latest Gundam movie is a sequel, arriving five years after the 2021 release, and was the biggest new film in Japanese theaters. It’s expected to continue doing well and may surpass The Keeper of Camphor Tree in the coming days.

Tomohiko Ito points out that his film stands apart from many popular modern anime movies. While those films often emphasize action and visual effects, his focuses more on emotional development and dramatic storytelling, blending these with supernatural themes. This is Ito’s fourth directorial project, and it’s based on the Kusunoki no Bannin novel series, which began in 2020 and currently has three installments. Given the success of this initial anime adaptation, there’s room for future adaptations of the series as well.
