Snowfall Spinoff Series Set In 1990s LA Coming To Hulu Next Year

The popular series Snowfall is getting a new spinoff next year. The original show, which ran on FX from 2017 to 2023, followed a Black family involved in the drug trade in 1980s Los Angeles during the rise of crack cocaine. It also explored a parallel story about the CIA’s involvement in Nicaragua, focusing on their efforts against communism.

Critics have praised Snowfall, often drawing comparisons to The Wire because both shows explore the world of drug dealing, corruption within systems, and the effects of crime on local communities. It currently holds a high 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

FX has given the green light to a new series based on the world of Snowfall, and it will stream on Hulu starting next year. The show is being produced by Malcolm Spellman, known for his work on Snowfall, along with several other producers from the original series: Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson.

This new series takes place in 1990s Los Angeles, right after the events of the original show. It centers on a person in recovery who’s trying to popularize West Coast rap music. The story unfolds as gang violence increases and record companies begin to capitalize on the growing hip-hop scene.

The new show will feature Gail Bean and Isaiah John returning as their characters from the original series: Wanda Bell-Simmons and Leon Simmons. Leon is Franklin’s best friend and right-hand man in the gang, with ties to the PJ Watts Crips, and Wanda is his wife, who battles a serious crack cocaine addiction but eventually seeks help to recover.

The upcoming Snowfall spinoff series will feature new cast members Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III. FX Entertainment President Nick Grad released a statement about the show, saying:

This new show revisits a pivotal time in music history – the rise of West Coast rap. We collaborated with Malcolm Spellman, who brought his incredible expertise from the documentary series Hip Hop Uncovered. It’s a standout performance from Gail Bean, and Isaiah John, along with a strong supporting cast, delivers as always. Given the success of Snowfall, we’re thrilled to have Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, and other key creators from that show involved in this project.
