Well, folks, we’ve just wrapped up season 5 of Slow Horses, and I’m already thinking about what’s next. This British spy drama, with the brilliant Gary Oldman leading the charge, has been a consistent winner for Apple TV since it debuted in 2022, and I’m eager to see where they take these flawed, fascinating characters in season 6 and beyond.

The show has consistently stayed true to the plot of Mick Herron’s Slough House book series. This series includes nine novels, as well as shorter stories and collections that expand on the narrative between each book.

Slow Horses Has Already Been Renewed For Seasons 6 & 7

Because the show Slow Horses has become so popular, it’s been renewed for two more seasons – seasons 6 and 7. The renewal was announced in July 2025.

Since its debut in early 2022, Slow Horses has consistently released a new season each year around the end of the year. It looks like this pattern will continue, with season 6 expected to premiere in 2026.

It’s become typical for the show Slow Horses to release new seasons each year, but the upcoming season is different in a couple of key ways. Notably, Will Smith (who is not the actor) has left his role as showrunner, as reported by Deadline in July 2025.

Season 6 of Slow Horses will be unique as it combines storylines from two of Mick Herron’s Slough House novels, Joe Country and Slough House. Gaby Chiappe is the lead writer for this season, and Ben Vanstone will be heading up the writing for season 7.

Even with all the recent developments, it looks like season 6 of Slow Horses is still expected to come out in Fall 2026.

Slow Horses Season 6 Production Status

Good news for fans of Slow Horses: season 6 is currently being finished up! Gary Oldman, who plays Jackson Lamb, has confirmed that filming for the season is complete, and they’re planning to start filming season 7 in late October 2025.

As a fan, I’m actually really glad to hear the team has time to polish Season 6 and make it truly amazing. It’s a little frustrating knowing it’s almost here but not quite ready, but I’d much rather they take the time to get it right. I’m confident the extra effort will be worth the wait!

Season 6 of Slow Horses is expected to feature most of the show’s regular cast. Gary Oldman has confirmed he’ll be back as Jackson Lamb, and if the season 5 finale doesn’t introduce any big changes, the rest of the Slough House team should return as well.

The cast includes Jack Lowden as River Cartwright, Kristin Scott Thomas as Diana Taverner, Saskia Reeves as Catherine Standish, Christopher Chung as Roddy Ho, Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Shirley Dander, Ruth Bradley as Emma Flyte, and Tom Brooke as J.K. Coe.

Throughout the series, James Callis (as Claude Whelan), Jonathan Pryce (as David Cartwright), Samuel West (as Peter Judd), and Rosalind Eleazar (as Louisa Guy) have all appeared in multiple episodes.

Slow Horses Season 6 Story Details – What Season 5 Sets Up

Viewers who have read the books the show is based on will probably already know what’s coming in the new season of Slow Horses. But for those who only watch the Apple TV series, here’s a look at what to expect in season 6.

It’s now clear the agents at Slough House are going to be targeted and suffer consequences, probably from both MI5 and the criminals causing trouble in London. Plus, MI5 itself is likely heading for chaos and poor handling of the situation.

As a big fan of the series, I’ve been reading the books, and things are really starting to heat up! In the sixth book, Joe Country, the pressure really mounts on Slough House and MI5 as they focus on a new target. Then, in book seven, simply titled Slough House, the team gets completely cut off – MI5 actively erases them from all official records. It’s a wild ride, and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out on screen!

With a new creative leader and a lot of source material to cover – including two books and five existing seasons – the show will likely take some unexpected turns. However, the core elements seem solid for now.

Fans of both the Slow Horses books and TV series are sure to love season 6. With the show already renewed and more episodes being filmed, there’s plenty more of the story to come before it concludes.
