Simu Liu Is Excited to Be His Own “Version” of James Bond in ‘The Copenhagen Test’

As we wait for official news about Amazon’s plans for the reboot, one Marvel actor is eager to play his own take on the classic action hero. Following his impressive action performance in the 2021 film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the actor – who will reprise his Marvel role in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday – is launching his own action-packed, sci-fi thriller franchise this month.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liu shared that the Bourne series is his all-time favorite, and The Copenhagen Test allowed him to create his own version of a classic action hero in the style of Bourne or Bond. He recognizes this kind of opportunity is “rare” for an actor like himself.

I really love the Bourne films – they feel so realistic and gritty. Paul Greengrass did an amazing job creating a unique, fast-paced visual style. I’m also a big fan of James Bond movies in general. And I appreciate how rare it is for someone like me to get the chance to play a role like this. It’s been incredibly rewarding to put my own spin on it.

Directed by James Wan (known for The Conjuring and Furious 7), The Copenhagen Test stars Simu Liu as an intelligence analyst who becomes the target of a dangerous hack. He’s caught between his loyalty to his secretive employer and his own survival as he tries to uncover who infiltrated his mind and their motives.

Simu Liu Doesn’t Think We’re Anywhere Close to Having an Asian Actor Portray 007

Callum Turner, known for his role in Fantastic Beasts, Aaron Taylor-Johnson from 28 Years Later, and Theo James of The Gentlemen are currently considered top contenders to be the next James Bond. Although actors like Idris Elba and Dev Patel have been popular choices in the past, Simu Liu believes an Asian actor playing 007 is still a long way off.

We’re not at the top yet, but that’s okay. While it’s vital to advocate for representation for everyone, it can be frustrating when your own experiences aren’t included in those discussions. I realized I’d likely never get to play a role like James Bond, so landing the part of Alexander Hale feels amazing because his background is so central to who he is. You immediately see this in the first episode – his bosses are suspicious because his family is first-generation immigrants. Characters like Bond and Ethan Hunt don’t face those kinds of challenges. It adds a really compelling dimension to a story that’s already about questions of loyalty and what it means to be patriotic.

Featuring Melissa Barrera, Sinclair Daniel, Brian d’Arcy James, Mark O’Brien, Kathleen Chalfant, and Simu Liu, the film The Copenhagen Test will be released on December 27, 2025. Read the official summary below to learn more.
