Sigourney Weaver has shared some new information about a potential fifth Alien movie and what it could have held for her character, Ripley. Back in 2015, she was excited about returning to the role in a film directed by Neill Blomkamp, but that project was ultimately cancelled when Ridley Scott decided to make prequel films instead. More recently, in 2020, a different script for Alien V came to light. This version, written by original producers Walter Hill and David Giler, would have centered around Ripley’s story.
The Cinémathèque Française in Paris showed the original film Alien on November 7th, followed by a one-hour masterclass from Sigourney Weaver. Titled “A Lesson in Cinema,” she shared her experiences making the movie.
Someone in the audience asked about Neill Blomkamp’s planned but ultimately canceled Alien 5 movie. The film would have ignored the events of Alien 3 and continued the story with the characters Ripley and Newt.
Weaver shared her high opinion of Blomkamp and complimented the abandoned sequel, saying she ‘loved working with Neill and his idea to bring back Ripley and Newt – it was a fantastic script.’ Ultimately, the project was canceled because Ridley Scott decided to focus on creating his own prequel series.
I was a huge fan of Neill Blomkamp’s work, especially his film style. I enjoyed collaborating with him on ‘Chappie.’ He had a fantastic idea to revisit Ripley and Newt in a new story, and the script was really promising. Unfortunately, Ridley Scott then decided he wanted to control the ‘Alien’ franchise tightly and focus on his own prequel films. I think that decision ultimately ruined the project. Neill eventually lost interest, which was a shame, because he’s incredibly talented, and I hope he finds success in future endeavors.
After that, Weaver began working on a 50-page outline for a potential new Alien film, called Alien V. She had previously discussed the outline, calling it “quite extraordinary” just recently, and now she revealed more about its unique approach. While she’s maintained that she wasn’t eager to revisit the franchise, she confessed that the idea presented by director Hill was intriguing.
Walter Hill has already written around fifty pages of a potential script. He’s likely expanded on where Ripley would be now, considering she’s been sidelined – possibly by the corporation or society – and is now around two hundred years old. Despite not initially wanting to revisit the series, the idea of Ripley facing these ongoing problems is intriguing. I’m interested in seeing how Walter’s script develops, as it sounds very different from the typical action-focused stories; it won’t involve running through air vents, but a completely new approach.
Weaver enthusiastically praised Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth series, and shared her excitement about the direction the franchise is heading.
I really enjoyed Alien: Earth – I found it incredibly compelling. It was both frightening and thought-provoking, offering a believable vision of a future where powerful tech entrepreneurs essentially own planets – a scenario that doesn’t feel too distant from the current state of things in America. It’s great to see the Alien franchise continuing to thrive, and it feels like a really exciting period for the series.
You can watch the complete masterclass video below, hosted by Mulderville on YouTube. The discussion about Alien 5 and Alien V begins around the 1 hour, 8 minute, and 52 second mark.
Sigourney Weaver hasn’t said no to returning to the Alien movies. She mentioned at New York Comic Con in October 2025 that she’s talked about playing Ripley again, and a script is currently being written by Walter Hill.
My friend Walter Hill wrote a fantastic 50-page outline for what Ripley’s been up to, and it’s really compelling. I recently spoke with the people at Fox and Disney about it. I’ve always believed Ripley deserved peace after everything she went through, but Walter’s writing feels very relevant to how society often deals with people who try to do good – they become a problem and are pushed aside. I think his first 50 pages are incredibly strong, and I’m considering collaborating with him to develop the full story.
