The passing of Alan Rickman meant the loss of a truly gifted actor. He had a remarkable presence in every role he played, captivating audiences whenever he appeared on screen. While we can still enjoy his wonderful films, we’ll never see the performances he might have given in future projects, including a potential sequel to Galaxy Quest, as shared by a former co-star.
Sigourney Weaver, who starred in Galaxy Quest, recently told Vanity Fair about a possible sequel that was once considered. While the cast was always enthusiastic about revisiting the project, the death of Alan Rickman has unfortunately made a sequel seem unlikely.
We always planned to make another film, but after Alan’s death, we lost the motivation. It was a real honor to create this tribute to actors, though.
The potential sequel to Galaxy Quest, titled Galaxy Quest 2, has an existing script. Tim Allen revealed that Robert Gordon, the writer of the first movie, had already penned a sequel, and filming was considered before Alan Rickman’s passing.
Sigourney Weaver shared why a follow-up to the movie Galaxy Quest took so long to materialize. The original film was heavily edited by DreamWorks to appeal to a wider, family audience, and in the process, many of Alan Rickman’s unique and creative scenes were cut. This ultimately led to Gordon refusing to allow DreamWorks to make a sequel, as Weaver explained.
Bob Gordon had written another draft, but he refused to share it with Dreamworks, believing they hadn’t understood the potential of our project.
Even with reported problems behind the scenes, Amazon was supposedly considering a sequel to Galaxy Quest back in 2016. However, the passing of Alan Rickman that year put those plans on hold. Now, almost ten years later, it seems unlikely a new movie will be made unless the original cast is available.
Many movies are sadly cancelled when a key actor dies, and it’s probably best to leave them untouched rather than try to continue without the original cast. Sigourney Weaver believes a director’s cut of Galaxy Quest should be released, including previously unseen scenes with Alan Rickman, and that’s a fantastic suggestion. The film is already beloved, and adding more of his work would be a wonderful tribute for fans.
While a second Galaxy Quest movie is unlikely now, a television series based on the film was once planned. Recently, after the merger of Skydance and Paramount, Deadline reported that CBS Studios is now working on a new version of the show.
