Warning! Spoilers for Shrinking season 3 ahead
Heading into the fourth season of Shrinking, Paul’s storyline appears to be diverging from the other characters. Harrison Ford, who plays Paul, has been a standout since the show began, and a major part of its success is the fantastic chemistry between Ford and Jason Segel (Jimmy). Their scenes blend genuine emotion with easy humor, and they really make the show work. It’s likely we’ll continue to see Paul and Jimmy supporting each other throughout the season.
Originally, the show Shrinking was intended to run for three seasons, with creator Bill Lawrence outlining a story arc focused on Jimmy’s journey through grief, forgiveness, and healing. However, Apple TV unexpectedly renewed the show for a fourth season before season three even aired. While this is great news for fans, the current season feels like the show is starting to wrap up storylines, particularly regarding the character of Ford’s Paul.
Paul Moving Away Makes Shrinking’s Season 4 Confirmation Baffling
In the third season of Shrinking, Paul made the difficult decision to retire. His work had always been central to his life, and a Parkinson’s diagnosis only strengthened his resolve to continue as long as possible. But after finding happiness with his wife, Julie, and repairing his relationship with his daughter, Meg, Paul realized he wanted to focus on other aspects of his life. The rest of the season has shown him preparing for this new chapter.
In the ninth episode of Shrinking‘s third season, Paul finally announced he’s moving to Connecticut to be closer to his daughter, something Meg had hinted at before. The same episode marked Ford’s last week at work, and he symbolically passed on his responsibilities to Gaby, played by Jessica Williams, although it wasn’t quite the way he’d envisioned. It seems like Paul’s storyline is naturally coming to a close.
It’s surprising to think Paul might not be a major part of Shrinking season 4. The show thrives on the close relationships between its characters – they’re neighbors, coworkers, or housemates. Moving Paul far away to Connecticut would really change the show’s feel. It would be even more disappointing if Ford wasn’t in the season at all. Honestly, if those are the choices, ending Shrinking after season 3 might have been the better option.
Shrinking Season 4 Is A Big Story Risk For Several Reasons
The potential for a fourth season of Shrinking is raising concerns, and it’s not just about Paul’s storyline. Most of the characters seem to be reaching the natural conclusions of their journeys. Jimmy dealt with his grief in season one, made peace with Lewis in season two, and is now focused on moving forward. Alice, Brian, Liz, and Gaby have all followed similar paths. Based on the events of season three, episode nine, it feels like all the character arcs could be neatly resolved by the end of that episode, making another season feel unnecessary.
I truly believe Lawrence, Segel, and Goldstein have a vision for this show. It’s been so brilliantly written so far, it’s hard to believe they’d suddenly abandon that quality. But, honestly, even amazing shows sometimes overstay their welcome, and Apple might be pushing for more episodes even if it doesn’t serve the story. All we can do is wait and see how things unfold. I’m still hopeful though, especially as long as they keep Harrison Ford’s Paul at the heart of it all. He’s fantastic, and I really want to see where his story goes with Shrinking.
