As a dedicated Shrek fan, I’m sorry to inform you that my excitement for the upcoming Shrek 5 has been slightly postponed. Instead of catching it next year as initially anticipated, we’ll be eagerly waiting until 2027 to witness its grand premiere.
When is the new Shrek 5 release date?
Universal Studios and DreamWorks Animation have moved the release date for Shrek 5 from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027. They decided on this change because there are many other big films scheduled for holiday releases in 2026, so they opted to launch Shrek during the summer instead.
The second postponement for Shrek 5 has occurred, following its initial announcement. Originally slated for release on July 1, 2026, the movie was moved back earlier this year. Directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, who also penned the screenplay alongside Michael McCullers, Shrek 5 marks a return to the franchise after more than a decade since the release of Shrek Forever After in cinemas.
In the upcoming installment, we’ll hear familiar voices from our favorite characters once more: Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. This time around, we welcome Zendaya to the cast, portraying the teenage daughter of Shrek and Fiona named Felicia.
It’s worth mentioning that in the 2007 film Shrek the Third, Shrek’s wife Fiona (portrayed by Cameron Diaz) gives birth to triplets. However, it remains unclear if these other two children will appear in Shrek 5 or who will voice them.
Plot details and further casting information for Shrek 5 remains largely mysterious as of now.
