The popular, campy horror series Sharknado isn’t over yet, despite 2018’s The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time seemingly wrapping things up. The franchise began in 2013 with the first Sharknado film, starring Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, and quickly gained a following for its over-the-top action.
A seventh Sharknado movie is being made, bringing back the deadly combination of sharks and waterspouts! The first Sharknado film followed a hurricane in Los Angeles that swept thousands of sharks into tornadoes, causing chaos for the city’s residents. The upcoming movie, currently in development, is called Sharknado Origins.
Anthony Ferrante, who directed the original Sharknado, will direct the new film, Sharknado Origins. Production is scheduled to begin later this year, and the cast will be announced shortly. The movie is a prequel set before the first Sharknado in 2013, and will show how the characters Fin and April – previously played by Ian Ziering and Tara Reid – met as teenagers. It’s currently aiming for a summer 2026 release.
The new movie shows how Fin and April first meet during a beautiful summer at the beach. Just when Fin is about to propose with a promise ring, a terrifying storm appears, bringing with it a ‘Sharknado’ – the very first time sharks fall from the sky. The movie playfully suggests there’s nothing quite like dodging flying sharks to test a new romance.
The movie series is completely ridiculous, but somehow, it’s still incredibly fun to watch. Like most series, the first movie is one of the strongest. It’s about sharks… and tornadoes! But it’s not just any combination – these are bizarre, hybrid creatures. Despite all the silliness, the plot itself is pretty standard: we have a tough hero, Fin Shepard (played by Ian Ziering), and his partner, Baz Hogan (Jaason Simmons).
Despite Its B-Movie Status, Sharknado Has Attracted Huge Stars
The original Sharknado movie unexpectedly became a fan favorite when it premiered on Syfy in 2013. Made on a small $1 million budget, it launched a series of six films. The Sharknado franchise is also famous for its surprising cameos from well-known celebrities, including Olivia Newton-John, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jerry Springer, Ann Coulter, Jackie Collins, George R. R. Martin, and David Hasselhoff. The sequels are Sharknado 2: The Second One, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, and The Last Sharknado.
The Asylum is a film studio famous for creating “mockbusters” – low-budget movies released around the same time as big-budget films. A new documentary called Mockbuster explores The Asylum’s quick and unconventional filmmaking process. As for the seventh Sharknado movie, Sharknado Origins, a release date hasn’t been set yet. The first Sharknado film is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
