Shane Black Praises Scott Frank’s Netflix Show Dept. Q

As a huge movie and TV fan, I have to say I’m really excited about this new crime series on Netflix! A critically acclaimed director recently called it absolutely “exquisite,” and it just came out in 2025, so I’m planning to check it out ASAP.

While promoting his new movie with Mark Wahlberg, director Scott Black was asked if he had any recent media recommendations. He enthusiastically praised Scott Frank, the creator of *Queen’s Gambit*, and his new Netflix series, *Dept. Q*, calling it “Great. Exquisite. Really good.” Black also expressed his pleasure at the news that *Dept. Q* had been renewed for another season, simply stating, “I’m happy.”

Okay, so I just finished watching *Dept. Q* on Netflix, and it’s really good! It’s written and directed by Scott Frank – the guy behind *Godless*, *The Queen’s Gambit*, and *Monsieur Spade*, so you *know* it’s going to be quality. The show centers around Matthew Goode, who plays this brilliant but troubled detective, Carl Morck. He’s reassigned to a cold case unit after a really bad incident. He’s joined by a great cast – Alexej Manvelov as a Syrian ex-cop who’s helping out as a civilian, Leah Byrne as a detective trying to make a name for herself, and Jamie Sives as Morck’s old partner who offers support from a distance. Seriously, if you like crime dramas, check it out!

The cast includes Kate Dickie as Chief Superintendent Moira Jacobson, Patrick Kennedy as Prosecutor Liam Taylor, and Mark Bonnar as Lord Advocate Stephen Burns, each with a distinct part in the central mystery of Season 1. The season primarily focuses on the disappearance of Prosecutor Merritt Lingard, played by Chloe Pirrie (with flashbacks featuring Bobby Rainsbury). Throughout the main story, the series also reveals details of past events that have influenced the present day.

What Critics and Audiences (and Netflix) Thought About Dept. Q

The new series *Dept. Q* received very positive feedback from both critics and viewers when it premiered in May. Rotten Tomatoes, a review website, gives it a “Certified Fresh” rating of 88% based on 59 reviews. Viewers also love it, giving it a 90% approval rating as of today.

The series has been a huge success, gaining a lot of positive feedback and attracting a large audience in just under three months. At the time, David Fincher expressed his gratitude to Netflix for allowing them to continue exploring the stories of *Dept. Q*. He also praised the talented cast and crew, especially Scott Frank, whom he described as a creative force, and said he was excited to see what Frank would come up with next.

Dept. Q is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
