Every year, lots of people visit the Hobbiton movie set in New Zealand. You’d think it would be unlikely to actually meet any of the actors from The Lord of the Rings while there, but one couple recently had an incredible surprise: Elijah Wood, who played Frodo, showed up at their wedding! It’s hard to believe, but there’s a video to prove it, and it’s absolutely adorable. (And thankfully, he didn’t try to take any rings!)
It’s hard to imagine a more perfect wedding crasher at a Hobbiton ceremony than Elijah Wood! As the star of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy (available on HBO Max), he didn’t come to steal the show – he made the already magical moment even more special. This heartwarming video shows him adding to the joy, not taking anything away.

It’s hard to hear exactly what the actor said during the interaction, but the enthusiastic applause and happy faces tell the whole story. I did manage to hear him congratulate the couple, and while he posed for a photo with them, he complimented both the wedding ceremony and everyone’s costumes, which appeared to be fantasy-themed.
Everyone was delighted by this, including Wood himself, and the excitement extended to those commenting on the popular video. Many playfully joked about the actor who plays Frodo unexpectedly showing up at the wedding, with comments along the lines of:

Those comments were all really nice and amusing, but my favorite responses came from people who jokingly suggested the Yellowjackets actor actually lives in The Shire. Here are some of the best ones:
- “Unexpected” like it’s not his front lawn -Hostess Snacks
- Crashes your wedding? That’s literally his house -The Lorax
- “Unexpected Guest”?? He lives there! You’re on his front lawn! -Chay Monci
- It was so nice of him to let them get married in his yard. -John Mack
- I don’t care what anyone says. In my mind, he lives there. -Eli
It’s fun to imagine Elijah Wood actually lives in the Shire, but of course, that’s not realistic.
He remains close to his fellow cast members and frequently appears at fan conventions with them. He also surprisingly seems to know a lot about Andy Serkis’s new Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum, and that Ian McKellen is involved. So, it’s not surprising at all that he’d be eager to gatecrash a wedding in the Shire.
It was wonderful to witness such a joyful moment, and I’m thrilled this couple had another unforgettable memory added to what was likely already a perfect day. Here’s to the happy couple and their marriage – and a big shout-out to Elijah Wood for being an amazing wedding crasher!
