Scrubs Star Dave Franco Addresses Chances Of Returning For Sequel Series

As a long-time fan, I was excited to hear about the Scrubs sequel, but it sounds like not everyone from the original cast will be joining the reunion. While we can expect to see some familiar faces, one of the stars doesn’t think he’ll be back. It’s a bit bittersweet, considering the original series – led by Zach Braff and Donald Faison – felt like it had a perfect ending with Season 8 and J.D.’s departure from Sacred Heart. Still, it will be interesting to see what the new series brings!

Rather than end after season 8, ABC and creator Bill Lawrence decided to continue Scrubs with a ninth season. This new season centered around a fresh group of medical students, while John Faison and John McGinley returned as faculty members. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled by the end of season 9. However, in 2022, Lawrence expressed his desire to bring back the original cast, and ABC officially ordered a revival in late 2024.

During a recent conversation with ScreenRant about his film Regretting You, Dave Franco addressed the potential for him to reprise his role in a possible Scrubs sequel. The Emmy-nominated actor admitted he doesn’t feel great about the show’s ninth season, and understands why, considering the series finale of season eight provided such a clear ending.

The last scene of the season 8 finale showed the cast tearfully saying goodbye, as they wrapped up filming. Then, unexpectedly, they announced they were returning for another season!

He fondly remembered having a wonderful time working on the original Scrubs, especially because it was the first time he truly got to develop a character – most of his previous roles had been smaller parts. He also enjoyed being part of a network comedy and praised both ABC and Bill Lawrence for allowing the cast to improvise. He added that he would definitely consider returning if asked to be in a sequel.

From the start, going to work was a blast – I was surrounded by hilarious people and we were all just focused on making each other laugh. Honestly though, I don’t think the fans would want me to return.

The upcoming Scrubs sequel is bringing back many original cast members, including Zach Braff, Donald Faison, John C. McGinley, Sarah Chalke, Robert Maschio, Judy Reyes, and Phill Lewis—all of whom didn’t appear in season 9. The show will explore both the returning characters and a new group of interns, and it appears the revival aims to distance itself from the often-criticized ninth season.

It’s happened before: shows sometimes try to ignore a season fans didn’t like when they bring the show back. For example, the revival of Roseanne completely rewrote its last season before eventually removing the main character and continuing as The Conners. Similarly, Netflix’s That ’90s Show mostly skipped over the final season of That ’70s Show and jumped directly into its own story and characters.

It’s unknown if Bill Lawrence and the new showrunners, Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra, are planning more seasons beyond the revival, but the show definitely needs to recapture the magic of the original eight seasons, rather than repeating the mistakes of the controversial ninth season. If the new series does well, John Franco might have the opportunity to return and become a prominent character at Sacred Heart once again.
