I was so excited to hear they’re making a sequel to Steamboat Willie! It’s called Screamboat, and it’s going to bring back a really famous character from the Mickey Mouse world. Mickey, of course, is a legend – he first appeared way back in 1928 in Steamboat Willie, and he’s been a beloved cartoon icon ever since.
After entering the public domain in 2024, the well-known short film has inspired several new horror movie remakes.
According to Variety, a second Screamboat movie is confirmed and will be titled Screamboat 2: Nothing Stays Dead. The film will also introduce Minnie Mouse to the horror series. While a release date is still unknown, filming is scheduled to begin in 2026.
Steven LaMorte, the director of Screamboat and returning for the sequel, shared his excitement about the project. He really enjoyed making the first film—a horror take on Steamboat Willie—and is eager to revisit that world with more thrills, chills, and miniature mayhem.
I’m incredibly excited to share some news: we’re making a sequel to our horror comedy! The first film was a blast to make, and we really enjoyed putting a darkly humorous spin on those characters. I can’t wait to dive back into the world of Screamboat and deliver even more over-the-top, miniature mayhem for fans.
The short film Screamboat concluded with Willie reuniting with his girlfriend, Minnie. Now, Screamboat 2: Nothing Stays Dead will pick up right where the first one left off. The filmmakers hinted that the sequel, alongside Minnie’s appearance, will feature even bigger, more over-the-top scenes and plenty of dark humor.
Screamboat 2: Nothing Stays Dead will pick up where the first movie left off, continuing the story and resolving the cliffhanger ending that hinted at the arrival of a new, terrifying villain: Minnie. The sequel promises to be even bigger and more over-the-top, with wild scenes and plenty of darkly humorous moments.
When Screamboat hit theaters on April 2, 2025, it wasn’t well-received by critics, earning a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite costing around $2 million to make, the horror remake only brought in $393,011 at the box office, and it played in a limited number of cinemas.
You can now watch Screamboat on Peacock, which means the filmmakers are earning money through both the streaming deal and from people who buy or rent the movie online or on physical discs like DVD and Blu-ray.
Screamboat is part of a growing trend of horror films featuring classic cartoon characters. After the copyrights on these characters expire, they become public domain and filmmakers reimagine them in scary or slasher-style movies. Films like The Mouse Trap and I Heart Willie have already done this with Mickey Mouse.
Recent years have seen a surge in horror remakes featuring beloved childhood characters. Examples include terrifying takes on classics like Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Grinch (as The Mean One), Bambi, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Popeye, and Snow White, with many more similar films being released.
As long as people continue to watch and stream horror remakes, we can expect more of them—including the newly announced sequel to Screamboat.
