As a long-time fan of the Scream movies, I was really excited for the new one, Scream 7. But honestly, it’s been scary seeing how much fans and critics disagree about it – that’s been the real problem with this release, not the movie itself!
The latest Scream film introduces a new Ghostface killer who terrorizes a seemingly peaceful town. Sidney Prescott, who has started a new life there, finds her worst nightmare come true when her daughter becomes the target. Determined to keep her family safe, Sidney must revisit her past and battle the horrors she thought she’d left behind, hoping to finally stop the cycle of violence.
The latest installment in the Scream series, Scream 7, is back with Kevin Williamson – the original screenwriter – at the helm. However, the film has received mixed reactions. Critics weren’t impressed, but audiences seem to disagree, creating a significant split in opinions – one of the largest seen for any Scream movie on Rotten Tomatoes.
| Movie | Audience Score | Critic Score |
|---|---|---|
| Scream | 80% | 78% |
| Scream 2 | 59% | 83% |
| Scream 3 | 38% | 45% |
| Scream 4 | 57% | 61% |
| Scream 5 | 82% | 76% |
| Scream 6 | 90% | 77% |
| Scream 7 | 77% | 37% |
Reviews from critics weren’t positive, focusing on both the surrounding issues and the film’s quality itself. Some described it as uninspired and boring, with one critic noting it was the type of movie Wes Craven would have disliked. However, audience reactions were more favorable, with many calling it great, funny, and featuring a surprising twist.
The upcoming film Scream 7 has faced significant controversy after actress Melissa Barrera was fired due to her social media posts about the Israel-Gaza conflict. The studio, Spyglass, considered her comments antisemitic and publicly stated they have “zero tolerance for antisemitism.” This decision sparked protests and boycott calls from fans, leading to considerable negative reaction towards the new movie.
Melissa Barrera played Sam Carpenter, the daughter of the original killer Billy Loomis from the first Scream movie (1996), in both Scream 5 and Scream 6. Jenna Ortega, who played Sam’s sister Tara in those films, also left the franchise after Barrera was fired. Both actresses have received a lot of support from fans, but it’s uncertain whether audiences will still support the Scream movies after this controversy.
Scream 7 is in theaters now.
