The latest Scream movie, Scream 7, has faced a lot of behind-the-scenes issues, including the firing of lead actress Melissa Barrera and the departure of co-star Jenna Ortega. This led many to question if the film could even be saved. Now, after a premiere in Los Angeles, the first reactions to Scream 7 are starting to appear online, giving us a first look at how the movie turned out.
Kevin Williamson, taking over directing duties from Christopher Landon (who left the project after initially calling it a ‘dream job’ that became difficult), directed the screenplay he co-wrote with Guy Busick for Scream 7. The film features the return of the original lead actor, as well as Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Courteney Cox, all reprising their roles from earlier Scream movies.

Paramount Pictures/Everett Collection
The cast of the new Scream movie includes Isabel May, Anna Camp, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Mckenna Grace, Asa Germann, Celeste O’Connor, Sam Rechner, Mark Consuelos, Tim Simons, and Joel McHale. Scream 7 features a new Ghostface killer who disrupts Sidney Prescott’s peaceful life by going after her daughter.
It’s a mixed bag when it comes to whether Scream 7 lives up to expectations, especially considering all the drama surrounding its production and calls for a boycott. Initial reactions are sharply divided. Some, like @EpicFilmGuys, are calling it exactly what fans wanted – a thrilling, fun, and bloody sequel that captures the spirit of the original films. Others, such as critic @manuelsbento on X/Twitter, find it lacking in substance, arguing it relies too much on nostalgia and fails to deliver genuine suspense or interesting plot twists.
Isabel May delivers a strong performance, but the latest film in the series feels disappointingly formulaic. It lacks originality and strangely abandons the self-aware tone that made previous movies special. The film focuses too much on past events and not enough on the characters we care about, ultimately losing what made the franchise enjoyable. This is easily the weakest entry yet—and hopefully, the series won’t sink any lower.
Viewers are split on the new Scream movie. @ViewerAnon really enjoyed it, calling it a fun, clever slasher film with a great performance by Neve Campbell and strong direction from Kevin Williamson, and noting similarities to the Halloween franchise. However, @griffschiller was much more critical, describing the writing as melodramatic and the visuals as cheap, like a low-budget TV show, and felt it disrespected the characters of Melissa and Jenna.
Reactions are still varied, with @FenixDKevin highlighting Neve Campbell’s strong performance and how she redefines the ‘final girl’ trope, while @justmiaslife offers a different perspective…
The show suffers from weak conflicts, clumsy plot twists, and characters who consistently make poor choices. While it might be amusing to mock, it’s never truly enjoyable. Thankfully, the self-aware humor has disappeared, and honestly, it’s better off ending now.
But “die” it will not, as Scream 8 is already reportedly in the works.
