Scream 7 Box Office Projections Surge Toward Breaking Slasher Franchise’s All-Time Record 30 Years Later

Scream 7 is scaring up a huge projected debut.

The new Scream 7 is set to release on February 27th and is expected to have a very successful opening weekend. As the seventh film in the popular Scream series – which began in 1996 – it’s directed by Kevin Williamson, the original screenwriter. The film brings back several original cast members, including Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Scott Foley.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scream 7 is now expected to earn between $40 and $45 million during its opening weekend in the US and Canada. This is an improvement over earlier predictions, which estimated around $35 million as of February 5.

The movie is expected to have a strong opening weekend, likely the second-highest in the series. However, if it performs exceptionally well, it could become the biggest opening weekend ever for the franchise, exceeding the $44.4 million debut of Scream VI.

This comparison of all the Scream movies uses the actual box office numbers. If we account for inflation, Scream 7 is projected to have the fourth-highest opening weekend of any film in the series, as long as it performs within current expectations. Here’s a breakdown of how the domestic and worldwide box office numbers compare for all the films, with and without adjusting for inflation:

Title Debut Debut (Adj.) Total Total (Adj.)
Scream (1996) $6.3 million $12.9 million $173 million $354.8 million
Scream 2 (1997) $32.9 million $66.3 million $172.4 million $347.6 million
Scream 3 (2000) $34.7 million $66.5 million $161.8 million $310 million
Scream 4 (2011) $18.7 million $27 million $96 million $138.8 million
Scream (2022) $30 million $34.7 million $138.8 million $160.6 million
Scream VI (2023) $44.4 million $47.8 million $169.1 million $182.2 million
Scream 7 (2026) $40-45 million (proj.) N/A TBD N/A

Although early estimates for Scream 7 are a little lower than previous films when accounting for inflation, it’s still expected to have the biggest opening weekend of any movie released in the US this year, surpassing the $32.8 million earned by Wuthering Heights. It’s likely to keep that title for about three weeks, until the release of the new Ryan Gosling sci-fi film, Project Hail Mary.

The film’s box office numbers could have been even better if not for recent controversy. Melissa Barrera, who starred in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, was let go from the production in 2023 after posting content supporting Palestine on social media. This led to calls for a boycott of the movie due to how Barrera was treated.

It’s still early to tell how well the new Scream 7 movie will do overall, but if it performs like Scream VI, it could eventually make between $152.4 and $171.4 million around the world.

Despite some challenges, Scream 7 is expected to be profitable. With a production cost of just $45 million, the film could earn back its budget in its opening weekend in the US. Early projections estimate a $60 million worldwide debut, putting it on track to surpass its $112.5 million break-even point.
