Scrapped ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Came Much Closer to Being Reality Than Originally Thought

Fans are still reeling from the news that Disney cancelled a planned movie about Ben Solo from Star Wars, and new information from The Playlist is adding to their disappointment. It seems a script for a film called The Hunt for Ben Solo, with Steven Soderbergh attached to direct, wasn’t just written – the project was actively preparing for filming, with crew assembled, when Disney unexpectedly shut it down.

According to The Playlist, the script for The Hunt for Ben Solo wasn’t just a preliminary idea. Lucasfilm had officially approved it, and key figures like Kathleen Kennedy, Carrie Beck, and Dave Filoni were all very excited about the project. They were reportedly highly enthusiastic about turning it into a movie.

Kennedy and the team working on the Star Wars story held off on showing it to Disney until they believed it was completely prepared for filming. Surprisingly, when they finally submitted the finished script, budget, and planned filming date, it was the first time Lucasfilm had ever presented a project that Disney ultimately decided not to make.

The project is still stalled because of Bob Iger and Alan Bergman. Bergman reportedly took a very long time to review the script, and, as we’ve heard before, they didn’t connect with the story. However, people at Lucasfilm felt the story made sense and fit well with the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

The report suggests that Bob Iger may have pushed for The Hunt for Ben Solo as a way to groom Alan Bergman to eventually take over as Disney CEO. However, this film, along with others, faced internal disapproval, which ultimately hurt Bergman’s prospects of succeeding Iger when he retires again.

Should ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ Have Been Made?

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Hollywood is full of projects that never quite made it to the big screen. Just recently, Sony Pictures chose to release KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix instead of in theaters, a reminder that even the most successful studios sometimes make decisions that don’t pan out.

The main puzzle surrounding The Hunt for Ben Solo is why Disney’s leaders opposed the film, claiming they didn’t understand it. This is surprising because Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni – who were well-placed to assess consistency with established Star Wars lore – actually approved of the script and story.

The mixed reactions to The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker have led some fans to wonder if Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni are better suited to guide Star Wars films than former Disney CEOs Bob Iger and Alan Bergman. While many new Star Wars movies are planned, a film focusing on Ben Solo, despite a completed script existing, doesn’t seem likely to happen.
