Schitt’s Creek Star Addresses Making a Sequel Without Catherine O’Hara

I was so saddened to hear about Catherine O’Hara’s passing earlier this year; she was truly one of a kind. I’d heard whispers of a potential follow-up project she was thinking about, but sadly, that’s no longer going to happen, and it feels like a real loss for everyone who loved her work.

Dan Levy, who played David in the popular CBC show Schitt’s Creek, recently returned to the Ontario town of Goodwood where the series was filmed. In an interview with Anthony Mason on CBS Sunday Morning, Levy visited the location for the first time since production ended in 2020. He shared fond memories of working with Catherine O’Hara, who played his character’s mother, and made it clear that any future projects, like a sequel or reunion, wouldn’t happen without her.

A Schitt’s Creek Sequel “Can’t” Be Made Without Catherine O’Hara

“No, not now, no. You can’t,” Levy said. “Yeah, I was thinking about it [before O’Hara died].”

Levy struggled to hold back tears as she said returning was harder than she expected. She admitted being overwhelmed by memories of Catherine, and emphasized that cherishing those memories is what helps her cope.

He continued, recalling how surprisingly good O’Hara was at creating memes, even though she hadn’t grown up with the internet. He always thought she was really funny.

Catherine O’Hara was a hugely popular actress known for her memorable roles in films like Home Alone, Beetlejuice, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. She also starred in successful TV shows, including The Last of Us and The Studio. Many fans loved her performance as Moira in Schitt’s Creek, for which she won Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Her absence would be deeply felt in any future Schitt’s Creek projects.

Between 2015 and 2020, the beloved comedy Schitt’s Creek ran for six seasons. Created by Eugene Levy and his son, Dan Levy, the show followed a formerly rich family starting over in a small town. Eugene played Johnny Rose, the father and husband to Moira, while Dan portrayed their son, David. Annie Murphy played Alexis Rose, Johnny and Moira’s daughter and David’s sister. Schitt’s Creek became a huge success, winning many awards and earning its place as one of the most celebrated comedies on television.

On January 30th, O’Hara was admitted to a hospital in Santa Monica, California, because she was having trouble breathing. Sadly, she passed away later that day. Doctors determined the cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, a complication of her battle with rectal cancer.
