‘Scary Movie’ Star Regina Hall Heaps Praise on “Really Funny” Sequel Script

Get ready for the return of the hilarious Scary Movie franchise! Scary Movie 6 hits theaters on June 12th, bringing back the spoof comedy that was so popular in the early 2000s. Regina Hall is returning as Brenda Meeks, Cindy’s longtime friend, and she says it was an easy decision. Despite her success alongside stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Hall couldn’t resist revisiting the role after all these years and explains her reasons for coming back.

Charlene Hall discussed her new movie, One Battle After Another, on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. While the film is generating Oscar talk, Hall is currently filming Scary Movie 6. She explained that production began on October 1st and she’s returning to set tomorrow. Hall also revealed what convinced her to reprise her role in the Scary Movie franchise.

I thought the script was hilarious, and I understood the filmmakers’ vision. I believe a creative project is always evolving until it’s finished and seen by an audience – you can’t predict the final result. I was especially excited to see the original cast return, with the Wayans family and Anna Faris reprising their roles. Their characters’ dynamic is still great – Brenda and Cindy are best friends, but Brenda remains as self-centered towards Cindy as ever.

It just felt like the perfect moment, with a wave of nostalgia in the air. It was a great time for a big, lighthearted project. When I read the script, I immediately knew it was funny, and I think people are really ready for something a little bit different and playful right now.

Regina Hall started her career playing a funny supporting role in the movie Scary Movie, which led to her being seen primarily as a comedic actress. While she worked consistently thanks to her talent for comedy, Hall eventually wanted to expand her range. She recalls that after becoming known for Scary Movie, people assumed she only did over-the-top comedy, and when she intentionally moved away from that type of role, people even questioned if she could still do comedy at all.

I didn’t want to be typecast as just a funny person. Actually, I wasn’t a comedian by training – I’d never taken comedy classes or performed stand-up, even though a lot of people assumed I had. After the ‘Scary Movie’ films, I went back to auditioning for the kinds of serious roles I usually went after. It was still a struggle, still a lot of work to find parts. But I decided I needed to prove I could do more than just comedy.

While Girls Trip didn’t break much new ground, it was an important film for proving her comedic talent. She followed that with Support the Girls in 2018, which was considered her best work until landing a role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. Now, her performance in the 2025 action thriller is receiving rave reviews, particularly for her work alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn.
