As a huge Scarlett Johansson fan, it’s no surprise to me she’s become one of the most successful actors ever – and a movie she did over a decade ago really shows why! Back in 2014, she worked with the director of The Fifth Element, Luc Besson, on…
Despite not being a critical favorite, the science fiction movie did well at the box office and recently reappeared on various streaming charts. Now, it has another opportunity to gain popularity with its release on Netflix beginning April 1st.

What Happens in Lucy?
The movie Lucy centers around a young American woman who is unknowingly forced to transport drugs. After being kidnapped, she has a substance surgically implanted in her body. This substance leaks into her system, unexpectedly giving her incredible abilities like moving objects with her mind and reading thoughts.
Luc Besson was the writer and director of the film, and his wife, Virginie Besson-Silla, was the producer. The movie featured Scarlett Johansson alongside Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-sik, and Amr Waked.
Critics had a mixed reaction to the science fiction movie, giving it a 67% approval rating based on 234 reviews. Viewers were less impressed, with only a 47% approval rating, and many pointed out problems with the story and the film’s idea that people only use 1% of their brains.
Although audiences weren’t particularly impressed with Lucy, the film earned Scarlett Johansson nominations for Best Actress from the Village Voice in 2014, and she was also nominated for Best Female Performance at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards.
The movie Lucy earned $469 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo. That’s over 11 times its $40 million production cost, making it one of Scarlett Johansson’s most successful films outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Talk of a sequel surfaced, but Luc Besson was inconsistent about whether one would happen. He first stated the film had a clear conclusion and didn’t require a continuation. Later, he said he’d consider writing a sequel if he came up with a strong idea, but that never materialized. In October 2017, rumors circulated that Besson had finished the script, but he publicly denied them on social media.
A new series connected to the original was announced in October 2022, a collaboration between EuropaCorp and Village Roadshow. Since then, there haven’t been any new details released about its progress.
Scarlett Johansson Is Making Her Horror Debut
Scarlett Johansson is confirmed to star in the upcoming reboot of The Exorcist, marking her first true horror role. While she appeared in the sci-fi/horror film Under the Skin in 2013 and the horror-comedy Eight Legged Freaks in 2002, The Exorcist will be her first time leading a dedicated horror movie.
Details are scarce about the new film, but director Flanagan has described it as a fresh and original reimagining of the 1973 movie. He announced this on March 13th, with the film scheduled to come out on March 12th, 2027.
Lucy is streaming on Netflix.
